attire when interviewer is acquaintanceI need opinions. I work in a casual, jeans and T-shirt industry. Tomorrow I am interviewing at a company that is closely related to my current employer. I know the interviewer -- we have been in several meetings and training sessions together, and we occasionally run into each other during the normal execution of our jobs. She knows me well enough to know my normal "look" (jeans and T-shirt, which is standard in our industry). How should I dress for this interview? Is it acceptable to wear nice jeans and a blouse? I am afraid that if I go dressier and put on slacks and a dressier top that I will look fake and/or like I'm trying to be someone I'm not, when the interviewer already knows who I am and what I'm like. All opinions are appreciated. Who you are is someone who understands that an interview is a special circumstance. Would you be being a fake if you dressed nicely for a funeral? No. You'd be someone who dresses appropriately for the situation, therefore someone who has good judgement and can project a good image when necessary.
Tess
I agree with Tess. You probably don't need a suit but you should dress above the jeans and sneakers look.
It also occured to me that you don't know who else might be there either during the interview, before or after. Even though the interviewer knows your everyday look, these others don't!
Tess Even if your interviewer was a close family friend or even family, jeans would probably turn them off. Even though you both are aware of the industry dress code, I could almost guarantee that the interviewer will be wearing something other than her usual form of dress. A nice pair of pants with a casual to dressy top and nice inch-heel pumps is probably just "formal" enough for a job in an office where you are certainly going to viewed by others and not just the interviewer.
