asking to recover costs

I have recently been invited to an interview that takes me out of the city.  I don't have a car at the moment and would need to rent one to get to the interview.  I have asked whether I would be able to recover the cost of renting the car from the company that wants to interview me, but the recruitment company have said that it would not "look good on me to ask to recover the cost".  Is this true?  All expenses to other interviews have been covered in the past, I don't see it as abnormal to ask to recover it this time.  Any comments or advice?

Do you want this job?  Then don't try to make your problems their problems.  Employers RARELY reimburse for expenses to get you to an interview.  This is why few employers will consider out of town applicants anymore.  When they do go ahead and do it, they offer it, you don't ask for it.  If you did have a car, they MIGHT offer mileage but honestly, I don't know any employer that is going to consider your car rental something that they should pick up.  Regardless of what you and I think about that, your recruiter has given you a VERY clear message.  If you want the job, consider the rental an investment in your future.

I definitely would not seek reimbursement.  Transportation is the applicant/employee's responsibility.  Asking the company to pick up the tab will almost certainly raise a red flag.

Are you willing to move out of the city if you get the job?  Maybe you're wasting your time and theirs.

'Left a good job in the city
Working for the man every night and day
And I never lost one minute of sleeping
Worrying about the way things might have been'
