Does Your Present Employer Know...... you are looking for a job? How do you answer that question?
Background: I won’t relocate until I’ve secured a job in the new city. I’ve deliberated on telling my boss well in advance, but am afraid of a possible replacement (one should think of worst case scenario). As much as I want to be honest and considerate, I can’t afford to lose my job without having secured a new one, so I’ve decided to not tell him yet. Obviously, I’ll have to tell him if I am considered for a position, plus I’d like to give him at least a 3-week notice. I would welcome the opportunity to be able to list him as a reference, but only if I am seriuosly considered for position.
I had a career counsel imply that not letting an employer know you are looking for a job is unethical. I though it was pretty common? >>> I had a career counsel imply that not letting an employer know you are looking for a job is unethical. I though it was pretty common? Proves the point that most career counselors are dolts who use to be HR dolts and typically don't know their butts from a hole in the ground. "I am looking to relocate to this city and am looking for career advancement opportunities not available in my current company. If I am offered this position, I will be more than happy to give you my immediate supervisor as a reference. For now, my job search is discreet." No compoany worth working for would have a problem with this statement.

M. You absolutely do NOT tell your employer that you are looking for a job. You do NOT tell them when you are being considered for a job. The only time you tell an employer about your job search is when you have accepted a job offer and are giving your notice. There is nothing unethical about this. Quite. What happens if your boss hands off your work and the deal falls through. If you want to be honorable I'd tell your boss that you're dissatisfied. Then when you leave it won't be a total shocker, but you won't have shot yourself in the foot. Also, your boss has to be the first person that knows you're leaving. This means you shouldn't tell anyone about your job hunt. Not your friends, not the cute intern, not the office malcontent. I don't care how much you think you can trust them. If your boss learns about your resignation from anyone but you, there will probably be ill will.
