Given incorrect spelling

I sent out some thank you notes for an interview a while back and checked with the company regarding the spelling of names for the interviewers I interviewed with. I recently found out that I was given the INCORRECT spelling! I feel terrible about this, but I don't know how else I could have verified this information. Will I now be penalized for this? Should I say something to my interviewers?

Question? Were you given the incorrect spelling on a business card or did you call the receptionist and she told you incorrectly?

If it was because of the business card, you should probably point that out to them because now they have customers/clients either not knowing their correct names or thinking that they are "stupid" because they can't even check the cards to verify the information.

If it was the receptionist, that may be a little trickier. I personally would want to know that someone was providing the incorrect information to people.

As far as how you could have verified the information, some companies have their executive staff listed on the company directory of their website. Ie: CEO's name, CEO's secretary's name, names of attorneys, heads of departments, Human Resource people are usually named as people to contact on the websites. If this is the case, the correct email address for the individual person is provided as well.

If the error was because of a misprint on say a business card, then I would certainly point this out.  This will make you look good!  You spotted a problem they missed, and corrected it.

But if somebody else had given you the spelling and messed-up, I wouldn't say anything.  If you do, then you're saying one of their employees made a mistake and are getting that person into trouble.  So you don't look so good.  And for all you know, you may have to work with or run into that person if you got the job.

Where did you get the correct spelling and how do you know which version is correct?

If you saw his name spelled one way on his business card and then saw it a different way on a web site, just politely ask "By the way, I saw two different spellings for your name. Which is correct?"
