Bad reference costing me jobs

Ummm, what part of what is being said about you is incorrect?  Did you leave without a reason and notice?  Then they are free to say that.  Maybe you told someone but HR is interpreting it as without notice.  And what is writing your supervisor going to do?  And the length of time you worked there matters how?

I think that the best that you can do is to explain this situation in an interview when asked why you left, and hope that you can put a good enough spin on it to counteract the impression they get from HR.

Your message was deleted before I could read it, but from the reply that is still showing, I am surmising (yeah, I'm into big words) that you left a job before you gave notice to the HR department for personal reasons and that the HR people are telling prospective employers that you are unreliable.

Am I close?

One solution would be to leave these people off your resume. There is a particular resume form out there that offers you the opportunity to list your skills and qualifications without actually listing the dates of your employment. I have never used this form, but it seems that, considering the type of skills and/or qualifications the company you are applying to ask for, you can leave out certain companys altogether.

Another solution would be, when the interviewer ask if he/she can contact your previous employer for a reference, let them know that the HR person will not provide a positive reference because you left so suddenly due to personal reasons. Let the prospective employer know that the issues have been dealt with and will not arise again. The company you are interviewing with may let that part of the reference slide, but will still want to know what type of an employee you were before you left.

I am sure that your previous company cannot say anything bad about your overall performance while you were actively working there.
