Interview Questions/Answers

When an interviewer asks how long I have been looking for a job, I answer honestly (3 weeks).  Then they ask if I have had any first or second interviews.  How should I answer?  I have had 3 first interviews and so far, no second interviews.  I feel like if I say that, it looks like I have been rejected by three other companies.

I'm not sure if that's a common question or not...it's rather pathetic of them to base their judgement of you on that criteria.  If it were me, I'd search for a grey area of  the truth.  Just because you've only had first interviews doesn't mean it wasn't by your choice. I'd say something like...I haven't yet found a good fit so I've only been to first interviews but this position is very appealing to me and I would be excited to have an opportunity for a second interview here.  I'd play with the wording a bit.

Good luck and keep your chin up! wink

Tell them you have to beat them off with a stick.  As far as second interviews, tell them that's what you call your first day at work.

Those are pretty interesting questions, and I do address one of them in my book on handling interview questions.  The point is that your answer to these questions tells me whether or not others are interested in you.  If not, then why should I be?

For example, somebody who's been looking for say 3 years might not be worth my time.  Now that doesn't mean this person isn't good at his or her job.  It could simply be market conditions, such as few jobs available in that field.  But if an interviewer begins to wonder if it's something about that person, then that's another story.

When asked those questions, you should mention that it's not important how long you've been looking because you are more than capable of doing the job, and that's all that matters.  And yes, you've been contacted by others, but you prefer working there (the one where you're interviewing).
