Help! Job offer Dilemma.Well, about a month ago I went on an interview with ABC company. About a week after the interview I received a call offering me the position. I accepted because I didn't have any other offers on the table. The representative said she will let HR know and someone from personnel would be getting back to me shortly. TWO weeks go by without hearing anything from HR. While waiting, I went on an interview with XYZ company. When I returned from my interview I received from HR of ABC company asking me to come in and fill out the paper work. I also had a message from XYZ company asking me to come in the next day for a second interview. Here is my dilemma. I am not really interested in working with ABC company. If I took the position it will be because its just a JOB and a paycheck. I am VERY interested in working for XYZ agency because it's in my field of interest, closer to home and the pay would be much better. But I still have to go in for a 3rd interview on Monday. I've already interviewed with the Assistant Director, Director (the two I will be working with) and my 3rd interview will be with the Chief of Staff. So this position isn't guaranteed. I haven't gotten back to ABC company about weather or not I'll be coming in to fill out forms but they left a message saying I have until Monday to accept or decline the offer that is on the table. So my dilemma is like so many others on this site. What should I do? Should I call ABC company on Monday and ask for an extension on giving them response, even though they've already been waiting a week to hear from me? or Should I just decline the offer and hope that this 3rd interview seals the deal with XYZ agency? My cousin works for ABC company and I think she pulled a few small strings to help me get the position there. Should I feel bad about declining the position after she tried to help me? If not, how should I tell her I declined the offered at her company even though I'm still unemployed? Any additional comments will be greatly appreciated. I think the answer depends on a couple of things. Are you currently working? If not, I can see where you would just want to get income. If you are working and you can tolerate where you are then you should stay put and wait to see if XYZ gives you an offer. If you are unemployed at the present time I say go ahead and accept ABC's offer. It's the only thing you have right now. If XYZ comes along and makes an offer just politely inform ABC that you appreciate all they have done but you have decided to seek employment elsewhere. Jay Don't ask ABC company for an extension to decide if you want to accept the job. You may come across as wishy washy and not able to make decisions in a timely fashion. So you know if your cousin pulled strings? Did you ask her to? If you asked her to pull strings for you then she has the idea that you want to work there and by not accepting the position after all her work you may be creating tension between the two of you. If you did not ask her to do this and she just did it out of the goodness of her heart because she thought she would be helping you, then not accepting it shouldn't create any hard feelings. Let your cousing know that you appreciated what she may have done but you are not really interested in working there. If you are not going to be happy at the job and can afford to wait a few more months, then by all means, don't accept the offer. An unhappy employee will not do the best job possible and may, in the long run, create conflict between co-workers and himself and come across as surly, unreasonable, unfriendly, unapproachable, etc. You have come very far in your interview process for XYZ company and it may be beneficial for you to attend the 3rd interview, do the best possible interview you can and pray for the very best outcome.
