Follow up after submit resume

When trying to gain a first/phone interview...

How long do you recommend waiting before following up via phone on a resume you submitted online?

Do you try to sell yourself briefly in the voice mail or just state your interest and ask about the status of the position?

If your first follow-up doesn' t produce a response, how long do you wait to follow-up again?

Thanks for your insight, it is very much appreciated!

Persistence is the key!  After submitting online, I would give it 2-3 days.  Employers are receiving a high level of responses.  Indicate you are just following up on your resume and you know that they have probably received a high response but you feel you are a great candidate for this position.  You may want to state one or two reasons why - but don' t be too long winded as this is just a message.  Should you get the person on the phone, you may have the opportunity to say more.

If you do not get a response back, give it another 2 days and call again.  I found that when I was looking for a job, I usually did get a call back after the first or second message.  Don' t forget to smile while you are talking - positive energy can really shine through.

It' s customary to give them about a week or two before you call.  This way, you' ve adjusted for the fact that they could be busy, and are following-up at the same time.  And when you call, you can ask about when you can expect to hear something so you don' t keep bothering them.

A couple of days at the most.

Call and DON' T leave a voice mail message. Try to speak to someone live. Have a very brief opening statement that points out something pertinent to the job ad such as:

"Good morning. My name is Jane Smith and I submitted a resume for the Controller position last Monday. Your ad indicated that you needed a CPA with industry experience. I am a CPA with seven years experience in the bio-tech industry and I was wondering if we could set up a time to meet."

The goal is (1) to get an interview, (2) to move your resume to the "review" pile of 20 resumes or (3) move your resume to the top of the "received" pile of 100 resumes.
