when to call back

Recently separated from the Air Force and was contacted by a large multinational conglomerate for an interview with one of their divisions.  Met a few of the divisions chiefs then called back for a second interview.  Met the President of the division, the operations chief and the HR VP.  Upon leaving the second round of interviews, the individual who called me in initially told me that they were really interested in me but just needed to find something for me.  Before leaving she told said, "call me anytime if you have any more questions."  My call back after the first interview was a Friday to a Tuesday time frame.  Now I' ve gone from a Tuesday to a following Wednesday time frame (8 days) and would like to call this next Friday afternoon to take her up on her offer.  What type of general questions can I use to make contact to see how the process is moving along.

Don' t make up a bunch of crap that you don' t care about.  They' ll know that' s what you' re doing anyway.  Just call and ask what the status is and see what they say.

I agree. You need to call back and find out the status.  The only concern is you stated

"Upon leaving the second round of interviews, the individual who called me in initially told me that they were really interested in me but just needed to find something for me. "

Sounds like you were not interviewing for a specific job.  However, they like you.  They may not have anything initially.  So ask when it would be appropriate to follow-up again.
