Returning after illness


I work part time while on disability from a broken back, and participated in a state vocational rehab program while earning my undergrad degree. I also did a state trial work period program, so the gap in my resume is very small (4 months) It has been 7 years since my accident and I will graduate magna cum laude in May 2007.

Currently, while I am interviewing I have not mentioned my accident or surgeries and do not plan to mention any of it. However, I am not really sure if it is appropriate not to mention the accident. Physically, I am capable for the positions which I am pursuing. No one would never know I had a serious accident by looking at me. What is the appropriate thing to do?

If it isn' t relevant and doesn' t impact the jobs you' re applying for, why would you bring it up?  Bringing it up will kill your chances with most employers.

You need to up on the current law.  Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, you don' t have to name any past or present  medical conditions or disabilities, unless if it needs accommodation.  That is only after your hired and need an accommodation.  Never ever mention any medical condition and disability in the job process.  If your doing fine you never need to tell anyone, it is none of their business!

It is courageous of  SENATOR John Edwards' s wife coming out with #### cancer announcement.  Keeping a job and finding another job is another thing.  Most HR departments are there to find and exclude anyone that will not fit there definition of a qualified worker.  That is the truth and besides what anyone will ever tell you. It is like saying the President of United States never lies.
