Reference/Interview question

Hey, quick question.  I have only worked for one company, and it has closed.  I' m always asked why I left (because it closed).  Are the interviewers assuming that I can' t give them professional references?  Should I say that the company is closed, but that my supervisors have given me consent to use their personal numbers for references?
Thanks for any advice

It's not unusual for them to want to know why you left a previous position. Like you, my last employer 'closed'. Nothing sinister or mysterious. Just say it. If they want references, that's different. Hopefully you have lined up a couple.

good luck

If your former supervisors have given you permission to give out their numbers for references, go for it. There is no need to tell the interviewer that the numbers you are giving them are your former supervisors personal numbers. Interviewers are just happy having references from you and they really don't need to know any major details about them except who they are.

There is nothing wrong with telling the interviewer that you left the company because they "went out of business", "needed to declare bankruptcy", "closed their doors", or whatever it is that happened. This situation certainly wasn't your fault.

Thanks for the advice.  I have the references, but I was wondering if they thought I didn' t because the business was closed.  I believe I' m just going to state that I have them when I' m asked about the business closing.
thanks

You need to recognize that you are at a disadvantage.  Worked for one out of buiness company.  So a) I can't verify that you worked at the defunct company and b) I can't verify that the "former supervisor" you gave me as a reference isn't your brother or sister-in-law.

You need to find several personal references that can be objective and verifyable such as a client you worked with in the former company (I have one on my list of references).   Yes, I worked with hal and s/he did work for graphic printing.  My interactions with him/her were consistently postive and blah....blah...

You might also find other personal reference that have some objectivity.  Yes, hal took 3 accounting courses from me and introduction to business law.  S/he was a bright student and did well in the course both academincally and did well in small group work....

If you are still coming up with a blank, hook up with a credible nonprofit and do some project based volunteering.  Yes, Hal volunteered 65 hours with YES youth services and he built an access database to track volunteer hours and trained staff on the use of the system blah blah...

Again you need as reference people who can credibly and objectively speak of your knoweldge skills and experience.
