Never had a phone interview before

I need some opinions. Just had a phone interview, and I don't think it went well. I don't know what the interviewer didn't like in my answers. She repeated some questions more than once, and asked clarification on things I had explained quite carefully. Of course, I patiently explained them again, trying to go into even more detail. She seemed distracted--perhaps doing something else at the same time. To top it off, she called less than10 minutes after I had submitted my resume, hardly enough to time to read it, and I am sure she had not even looked at it, since she asked me why I am looking to leave my current company (I am unemployed).

I answered her questions to the best of my ability, and don't think I did terribly. When she asked me where I saw myself in a year, that threw me off a bit. A year? Why, most new hires should expect to see themselves in the same position as they started since a year is really not a reasonable time to expect sufficient advancement. I said that I saw myself working in a job I enjoyed and where my contribution was valued.

In the end, she did not even give me a chance to ask any questions, just said that she would get back to me if she wanted to schedule an in person interview. I'm guessing that, since she is the decision maker, if she wanted to schedule an in person interview there was nothing preventing her from doing so right then and there.

Is there something I should've done differently? I don't know what I did wrong. I personally think she called as soon as she got my resume without even reading it, and once she started reading realized that I did not have the right qualifications. Is this normal? Are phone interviews generally this unprofessional and disorganized? I was under the impression they were supposed to be just like regular interviews, with a chance to ask questions and all.

This is all so strange... Isn't there anyone left who knows how to interview applicants? Where did all the experienced hiring managers and HR people go?

One more thing. She did not offer her contact information, and I did not even get an opportunity to ask. Am I expected to find out her e-mail address somehow and send a TY anyway? I do not think I'll be hearing from her again, so this would probably be a waste of time anyhow, but what's the etiquette for handling this kind of a situation? Am I supposed to send a TY card to the company addressed to her? Is there any point to that?

This is all so bizarre... I'm usually disappointed after not doing too well in an interview, but now I'm not even disappointed. I'm just confused...

I always have the feeling during phone interviews that the person on the other end:

  • has no idea what it is they are talking about because they have just received an email from their boss telling them to call and get the answers to specific questions which the boss wants asked;
  • are multi-tasking and not paying attention to what I am saying;
  • have spent the entire day on the phone and just doesn' t give a rats-@ss anymore.

I don' t see the value in phone interviews anyway. One of the best tools an interviewer has si the interviewees body language, facial expressions, dress style, etc. Phone interviews are so impersonal. The phone interviews I have had have almost always resulted in the interviewer making a face to face interview appointment with he hiring manager where the exact same questions are asked.

As for the thank you card, the smart-@ss in me says to go ahead and looked in the "sent" folder of your email and send a thank you card to her telling her that you appreciate the call.
