references

My husband interviewed for a position last week which went very well I hear.  He wasn' t asked for his references by any of the three interviewers at the time.  The following day, The HR Manager called and wanted him to return for an assessment test.  He again brought his references with him, but this time he asked if she wanted to have them.  She said no.  What does this mean if anything?  She did divulge to him that he was a STRONG candidate and mentioned if he wanted to be called first before she checked his background.

As a rule of thumb, the more responsible the position, the more likely a company would want your references. But many companies view references as worthless.

The job that I just landed (tax accountant) did that to me as well. I had reference letters with me, and their contact information. I didn't ask during my interview whether or not they wanted them because I figured they would. When the hr person called back to make me the offer, I asked if they needed references. She said no, but gave me all the details about completing a background check.

So, the company that your husband interviewed with probably has an independent company do background checks, which is why they probably didn't ask for references.

Today I applied for a job where I was asked for five references (three professional, two personal).

I only had one personal reference so I took a professional reference and converted her to a personal one as we're actually quite friendly and I'm sure she wouldn't mind (I'm calling her to let her know).

What you have to do to get a job.
