References contacted

About 2 weeks ago, the references I used for a position told me that they were contacted by a potential employer.  All stated that their convresations went well, but I have not heard from the employer.  In the profession that I work in, references are not checked unless you are considered to be in the top 3 to 5 candidates so at what point, knowing that my references were contacted, would it be acceptable to contact the company to reiterate my interest and/or check on their time line?  Would it be best to email or telephone?  Thanks.

Call (on the phone) and ask what the status of the position is.  You don' t have to show your interest, they know you' re interested.

It would be acceptable to call (not email) and tell them that you understand that they have spoken to your references and ask whether there is anything else they need from you before making a decision.
