Interview suit dress code question

I am wondering if I should invest in a new suit. I have one suit (never had to wear) - a dark grey, almost black, jacket and a light grey pant. Will this suit do?Is it considered less formal if you don' t wear matching jacket and pant?Or can I keep the jacket and shop for a matching pant? I went to macys, looking for matching pant. They have a very good collection of dress pants, for ~$100. But none of them ' exactly' matched the jacket. What do I do? Any suggestions?

I think someone is more professional looking if they are dressed in a suit consisting of a matching jacket and pants. I have a personal preference for dark colors. A suit that is dark blue with either a light blue shirt or a white shirt and medium blue tie. A black suit could end up looking funeral but if you paired it with a nice colored shirt, it should be fine.

I do not mean to offend anyone who wears tan or beige suits but they just give me the impression of someone who wants to take advantage of you. A white suit puts me in mind of the deep south plantation owners (I have always admitted to being slightly strange) and light blue brings to mind pictures of my father on his and my mother' s wedding day. I can' t recall actually seeing anyone wearing a gray, or even dark gray, suit so I can' t tell you what that would bring to mind.

It depends on the kind of job you' re going for, but it it' s an office job in a corporate setting, I think a matching suit would be the way to go.  It' s hard to find pants to match a jacket exactly unless they are bought as a set, but if you can find matching pants, go for it.  Otherwise, I think it would be worth it to invest in a nice "interview" suit.  It will pay off in the long run.  Good luck!

Take it from someone who worked in retail a million years ago.  You' ll never exactly match the jacket to the pants after the fact and it will be glaringly obvious.  Black and White are actually the two hardest colors to match up to.  You have to have exactly the right color, sheen (or lack thereof), fabric, etc.

So, either buy a whole new suit or go with the outfit you have.  While it isn' t exactly a suit, it is better than trying to get away with something that is close but not quite.  Look around, there are places cheaper than Macy' s but still nice if cost is an issue.  If you' re male, I highly recommend Men' s Wearhouse.

Thanks for your replies. I am a male. I prefer keeping the jacket, instead of spending on a new suit. I guess I will go with a lighter color pant instead of trying to find a matching color pant.

I think the lighter pants would be OK, but not too light. If the jacket is very, very dark grey, I think a pant in a medium grey color--not a charcoal, but not a really light grey, would be fine....

Or, and I' m serious here, go to a local thrift shop and look for a suit. I found a designer-name suit for my husband that looks brand new, and very expensive. (I think it' s Perry Ellis or Christian Dior.) And I also have purchased new-w/tags suits, still unhemmed, there to resell on eBay! I' d go that route personally, instead of your existing outfit. Nobody' s gonna know where it came from, and, IMHO, a suit that is higher end and worn a handful of times is nicer than one that is new and not of as fine a quality. As long as it fits--and you can always have it altered to fit. You can get a nice suit for $15, and even if it costs $20 or $30 for hemming, that' s less total than a nice new pair of dress slacks that still don' t give you a true suit.
