Forced to resign How do I overcome...

I was forced to resign a few years ago from a position I only had for 6 months.  I was told that if I signed the paper and prospective employers called for a reference that all parties involved would say I was eligible for rehire.  Since that time the company went out of business.  What should I tell prospective employers?  Should I even worry about this?  What is the ethical way to handle this situation?

Tell them your position was being phased out and that you opted to leave to pursue other avenues. If they ask if they can contact the company for references tell the interviewer the company went out of business. If the job you are going for now has nothing to do with that company or its business, then it may not even come up.

You don't want to tell a potential employer that you were fired or forced to leave, but you can spin it to put yourself as the decision maker for your leaving. And, not to sound blase about the situation, but they can't really check to discredit your story since they have nothing to check.

If you really want to try to find someone from that particular company that you can give as a reference just as a gesture of good faith, there are different websites like peoplefinder.com or linkedin.com that you might try. (I believe peoplefinder.com will require you to pay money to locate the person, but I am not totally sure about linkedin.) This way you can honestly tell the interviewer that you have tried to locate someone from the company but have not been successful.

you're talking years ago on a position that lasted six months in a company that is out of business. Forget it.

Six month position doing sales management. Following my hire it became obvious to me that the company was unstable. Since that time it has gone out of business.

That's all you need in your resume and you will never be asked about it in the interview.
