Interviewing for 2 jobs

I had a great 1st interview yesterday for a company I really want to work with.  It' s for a full time writing position and before a 2nd interview can be scheduled, I have to complete a take home writing by next Wednesday (I' m going to have it finished by the weekend and submit it Monday).  However, I have an interview on Friday for a contract position at a big biotechnology company.  I' ve been working with a recruiter whose firm provides staffing for 3 major pharmaceutical companies in the area.  The contract position would only be for about 6-12 weeks (I' d be covering maternity leave).  The position isn' t really something that I want to do in the long term, but I do want to make connections and start working.

I really want the full time writer job, but if my interview for the contract job goes well tomorrow I most likely have to have an answer for the staffing agency early--mid next week about whether or not I want the job.  Should I say anything to the recruiter tomorrow that I' m interviewing for other positions or should I just wait and see?  I don' t want to burn any bridges with the recruiting agency.  Any advice?  If it helps, I' ve been with the agency about 2 months and this is the second position they' ve sent me to interview with.  Thanks for any advice!

In my humble opinion is it perfectly acceptable to tell a recruiter that you have "other irons in the fire". They are professionals and would expect that you are persuing other opportunities as well as the one they are offering, and not just betting the farm on this one position. If you are as good a candidate as they hope you are, then certainly other employers would also be seeking someone with your qualifications.

Just remember to tell them that you will keep them informed of any progress with your other opportunities and that you will not accept another position without getting back to them first.

I agree. I was contacted about a week and a half ago by a division of an agency I have been registered with since the fall of 2003.  They had found my info in their database, and the recruiter I spoke to said she had a few permanent positions they thought I would be perfect for. I met with the recruiter on a Friday, and really hit it off with her.   I interviewed with one of their clients last week Wednesday, at the agency' s facility.  Even though the client decided they didn' t want to bring me back for a second interview, at their own facility, because I wasn' t a good "personality fit" for their company, the recruiter and I agreed to work together for other positions.  I told her I am currently waiting on another position I found on my own, and will keep her posted.

The only suggestion I might add when working with recruiters/agencies: you don' t have to reveal the name of the companies you are interviewing with on your own. I think the less said the better.  Just tell them you have other interviews, and if they press for more info, just say you' d prefer not to go into that.
