Correct EtiquetteI work for a small law office (2 attorneys and 2 paralegals - me being one of the paralegals). I have quietly been searching for a new job for the last couple of months and so far have been able to keep it under raps from my office. Unfortunately, I have not gotten a new job yet and am thinking that I'm going to have to start sending out more and more resumes, and could possibly be going on more and more interviews. There is one job that I'd like to apply for, but I'm terrified that the minute that I do, my boss is going to hear about it because he works with and knows attorneys at this company. What is the etiquette in this situation? Should I give my boss a head's up that I'm planning on leaving, or should I wait until I have a solid offer until I tell them? If I'm supposed to wait, what is the correct way to handle taking time off for interviews? I know I shouldn't use sick time, and I haven't yet. I just don't know what to do. There is one job that I'd like to apply for, but I'm terrified that the minute that I do, my boss is going to hear about it because he works with and knows attorneys at this company. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Some bosses will let you as soon as they can afford to after they realize that you are looking. Even if I can afford to not have a job I will always maintain a balance between looking and keeping. While I'd love to joke about lawyers and ethics, I'll restrain myself for a minute. I would like to think that any employer would keep a candidate's application for a job confidential and that goes for this attorney. If you really want to apply, I would do so but make sure that your cover letter states that your job search is confidential. In the long run if something goes wrong it wouldn't help much, but at least you are telling the attorney that it is confidential (just in case he's a dope and doesn't understand). As for telling your boss, you only tell him when you have accepted a job offer. Not now, not when you THINK you might have the job. Only when you get the offer, you agree to it and accept it. | |
