mixed signals

So I was going for this front desk job at a decently fancy hotel. My dad' s worked there (but in a completely different department) for almost 20 years and had a good friend at the front desk who was more than willing to help me along. I went in to hand in my application, dressed in serious business attire (expensive skirtsuit and briefcase and all!), aced my first interview. Once again, my dad knows the head of HR so he basically gets inside gossip and stuff, and the first interviewer said she loved me, and that I was exactly what they were looking for and all my answers made me look like a perfect fit.
They brought me back the next day for an interview, which according to my dads friend I ALSO did very well at. Also the second interviewer wanted to set me up for the third interview THAT DAY (and apparently once you pass the third interview you' ve got the job).
However the third interviewer was stuck in meetings, and I was supposed to get a callback that night or the next day for a phone interview.

Anyway, that was a week and a half ago. I tried calling second interview lady but she didn' t pick up so I left a message (this was a week ago). Can anyone tell me how I screwed it up when everything was looking so good?

PS I' m new to this whole "trying to get a real job" thing (I' m 20), so your advice will be greatly appreciated and maybe help me get a job that isn' t retail.

It doesn't sound to me like you screwed anything up. It sounds as though the third interview lady didn't want to take the time or didn't have the time to follow through with the interview. Why the 2nd interview lady didn't return your call is bad business and unprofessional on her part. Since your dad has the ability to get the inside scoop, ask him to contact his HR friend. Also, do you have an e-mail address for second interview lady? If you do, you might send her an inquiry. It is possible that she passed your call on to third interview lady and thought that it was all taken care of. I am wondering if you could also stop by the hotel. You know, just casual because you are going to lunch with your dad. This is something that I wouldn't think that should ever be done ordinarily. And I am not making light of a hotel desk job, but since that is a very entry level position, and is also very customer oriented, I am thinking that it would be not only acceptable but beneficial on your part. It would show them that you are just that much more interested in the job.

I don' t think you necessarily screwed anything up, but maybe you just didn' t do as well as you thought. No one is going to say "Cripes! Did you see Mr. Urbanspike' s kid??? What a moron!" Everyone will be polite.

It also may be that it was only your father' s connections that got you two interviews, however the third person wasn' t swayed.

You have a connection (your father) into the company. Have him check to see what he can find out. Again, they may just be polite with him but at least they may tell him whether or not you are still being considered.
