Not getting any job offers, why
I have started looking for another job a little over a month ago. I am in a temp job now that is ending in one month. Over the month I have been looking, I've gotten like three interviews, and have sent my resume out to tons of hiring companies. I have got nothing. One of my interviews was great! The interviewer even said that he cant officially offer me the job, but he will call me in the next few days..he said I'm exactly what they were looking for and no officially, but I'm the one. I said great!, I cant wait to hear from you. The time they said they would call came and went, I called and left a message for them to call me back, and nothing. Then a week later, I get a letter, saying that i DIDNT get the job because they chose someone with better qualifications! That just really drove my self-esteem down. You shouldnt tell someone that in the interview at all, especially when you dont even have the courage to call the person back to tell them, oh I'm sorry, I told you the wrong thing, ya didnt get the job. I just dont know what I'm gonna do. I have a great resume, looked over by a pro, several yrs. exp, great personality. I'm worried I wont get a job, what else is there to do to prepare?
Don't take this stuff personal, there is really no reason to. It is disappointing and I have been on both sides of the situation, and I assure you it is mostly business. You might not realize this now, but it really did turn out for the best. Just as a hiring manager should not be interested in a candidate that is not fully committed to accepting the job, you should not fret over a job where they were not fully committed to hiring you. The fact that you are liked well enough to get close to, if not getting, the job is good enough. At least you got a rejection letter within the month, some of the time the candidate is left with no idea where they stand indefinitely by being strung along. It might be that another candidate is a little less as good, but also a lot more affordable than you. It might be that the hiring manager is full of bs. It might be that they gave the position to the owner's relative. It does not matter at this point. Take pride in knowing that you are capable and continue interviewing. Find a place that stands by its word, this will give a hint of how they treat you as a employee. Don't take it so personally. Granted, it's easier said than done, but it helps to just reiterate it to yourself. I'm going through this right now, and the hiring manager may think you're the right person at the time, but then a super candidate might fly into the mix and they're then the top choice. It's very easy to overanalyze, and thereby believe it's something you did/said, but after many times of being thisclose to getting the job, and it ended up going to 1) an internal candidate, 2) someone way over-qualified for the position who takes a pay cut, 3) the hiring director's friend, and so on and so forth...you realize, it's a competitive market out there and many times it IS your experience that counts, but most other times it's also "right place, right time, right candidate" (ie, luck!) Keep plugging along, don't lose your drive and personality, and the right fit will come along eventually. I just had a sort of telephone interview this morning for a data entry position and the woman I talked to said she was very impressed with my resume and I must have impressed her on the phone too because now she wants me to come in Tuesday for a person to person interview. I am so excited but also scared. I have not had an interview in about a year. Wish me luck. Thank you all for listening. | |
