Job References

I have noticed recently while going on interviews that potential employers are not asking for a list of references.  Is this common these days since most companies do background checks anyway?  Or could it be a bad sign that they are not interested to pursue me as a candidate anymore?
Well, I can't really say that I am an expert in this area as I don't wait for interviewers to ask for my references. when I first started to actively see employment I asked three people that I worked closely with and for i they would give me a reference that I could give to potential employers. I asked my former supervisor, one of my direct bosses and a very good friend of mine who happens to be a supervisor but in a different section of the company. I also picked up her slack on numerous occasions because I was familliar with her job. (Saved her buttt on more than one occasion) Anyway, they provided me with the references (all glowing) and I made copies and distribute those with my resume plus bring them with me to interviews. My problem extends to when I am actually asked for references and they want more than the three I can provide them up front. I can provide them with names of others, but I always feel an obligation to contact the extra references to let them know that they may be called.
It is not a bad sign at all. Don't even worry about it. Many companies do not have an HR department or do not have formal processes in place.

If you have good references, do offer it. Even though I came late to an interview and the hiring manager had no interest in me, my references gave me such good recommendations that I got the job anyway.
