New Job and Vacations
How and when do you bring up a vacation already paid for when looking for a new job?
The questions that I have had asked of me in about 95% of the interviews that I have been on is "When are you available?", "Can you start immediately?" and "Are you currently employed where you would need to give two weeks notice?" It is at that point that I would let them know of any times when I had a previous commitment. ( a doctor's appointment, vacation, family time, whatever). If the interviewer doesn't ask, I tell them at the end of the interview at the point where the interviewer asks if there is anything else that I would like to ask or talk about.
Only when an offer is made. Anytime before that will lessen your chances of getting an offer. "Thank-you for your offer. It is acceptable to me and can start in two weeks. However I want you to know that I have a vacation already arranged and paid for that will be in eight weeks. Of course I will take that time off unpaid." No reason to bring this up before an offer is made, unless the vacation you are taking is in two weeks and would put your available date off. This happens a lot--people have "life" going on while they are job hunting. It' s not an unusual situation, but you can' t expect to be paid for that time off when you start.... | |
