When management isnt honestI think it's mainly because bosses are too scared to say anything. And when you try to talk about it to someone, they try to avoid you or make up an answer that doesn't make sense or even lie to you. (in some right to work states, they don't even have to give you a reason). In my case, I get management saying, "This may come as no suprised to you, but...." Um YEAH, it was a suprise to me, at the orientation you tell me no one was loosing their job or they didn't go over peoples performance before taking on the new contract. So isn't it common sense, if someone tells you "NO sweat you're not going to loose your job" and then...well, you loose your job, makes you want to go postal on those people sometimes. But, my question is why all this "dishonesty, sneakiness and "passing the buck" This stuff is getting more and more like the movie "Office Space" where they lay off a guy, not tell him that he's laid off, and perhaps he can "get the hint" that he's not wanted by stopping his paychecks. That way NO one has to tell him. Let's just keep him in the dark until it's too late. I've noticed that every layoff I've witnessed was prefaced by a speech that there are not going to be any layoff. I think it is because of the reverse Darwinism that such demoralizing news inspires; the wolves dust off their resumes and head for greener pastures while the sheep are too scared to do anything more than huddle at their desk and hope they'll survive the cut. You need to know the signs of impending layoff which I've listed below. If you see most or all of these you might want to brace yourself for what's coming. 1) A new manager is brought in from the outside. The list of companies he's worked for in the past is a mile long. 2) An all hands meeting is announced by this new manager, who asks if anyone has heard any good rumors. 3) Someone asks if there are going to be layoffs and the manager laughs nervously and said "No, there won't be any layoffs. Who told you that?" The person asking is usually a friend of a friend of an executive. 4) Teams are moved to a less desirable building, for little or no reason. 5) The exectives or middle managers announce that everyone must submit a copy of their resume and talk with them one on one. 6) You boss is skittish and reassigns the most difficult tasks to his underachieving brown-nosers. 7) These brown-nosers take on these tasks without usual whining when asked to do something that is too hard. Most managers are liars. I haven't met a manager, especially a sales manager, that doesn't lie. My current executive manager tells me I am too honest BUT that is the way I am. I will not lie to cover up something or to sugar coat something. Why? Because I do not want my subordinates to lie to me and if I lie to them what is that going to demonstrate to them about me? It is a sad commentary about management. The main reason why managers lie about job security is that if they told everyone that they will be laid off, employees will start to develop and attitude "why should I bust my rear for this company?" then they go off and sabotage the work flow. | |
