Smoking On TVRight now - we're watching Law & Order, Criminal Intent and the head detective (I forget his name) was smoking! Should TV characters on all shows not be allowed to smoke? What do you all think? http://www.tvsquad.com/2007/07/26/should-they-ban-smoking-on-tv/
Bunzo No, I don't think they should ban smoking on television. What would that do anyway? You can see a lot of people smoking in your community when you go outside. If they ban smoking on TV, what are some people going to want banned next? You don't want to start something like that and start a precedent.
I agree what's next don't show people eating on TV? Unless something is illegal I don't think it should not be shown on TV, however I do agree adult content should be after 9:00 - which then should include reruns on cable channels.
Well, you remember the Marlboro man......quite a handsome fellow for which to possibly glamorize smoking. Already, our television programming - not the reality shows - aren't life-like. Television and the media want you to believe that you have to obtain a motive to secure a criminal conviction. More important is the evidence. Who knows! Maybe having the characters smoke gives it an appealing real life drama. I smoke so I can't really say either way. If it's protested because of small children, goodness........there are worse things in life to worry about.
Unfortunately, even younger children these days are smoking. If they wouldn't see it on TV, they would see it somewhere else, probably at home. My parents both smoked but I never had the urge to go along and do it too. My father quit early on, but my mother smoked until I was a teenager and then I persuaded her to stop. She hasn't smoked in 20 years. Personally, speaking of smokers, I think more smokers should be considerate of other people. If I actually did smoke, I would respect other people's space and not smoke if they requested it. I know secondhand smoke affects people. It bothers me that people smoke in closed cars with children and/or their pets. That's really cruel and inconsiderate. We have debates over smoking bans in restaurants and bars. The bans have stayed in place even though they keep getting disputed. I can certainly see the reasoning behind the bans. Who wants to taste smoke instead of their food? That's my vent about smoking. These shows try to be as realistc as possible (though they miss the mark in some key areas) and I believe I remember the show you are referring to. If I remember it correctly, the lead detective wanted information and evidence from the person they were questioning and they best (if not only because I cannot remember the entire thing) way for him to do this was to ask for a cigarette. This manuever will put the person at ease, cause them to "relate" to the detective. It is a "police trick" just like telling a suspect that they have an eyewitness when they don't to see the reaction from the individual. Should smoking be banned from television? What's the point? The best way to keep your children rom smoking is to educate them on the hazards of tobacco. Smoking WAS banned from TV for quite a long time. Now it's being shown again. I'd like to see tobacco eradicated from the face of the earth. I quit smoking 20 years ago. I don't even allow anyone who smokes in my house (they stink up the place!). Since it's not illegal, I doubt that it can be banned from TV again. WB OMG, enough with the censorship madness!
There’s always going to be something broadcast on television that someone will complain about. Sex, violence, smoking, drinking, drugs are certainly sensitive in content, but one could also make an argument for not showing sports events (people get hit, hurt, start fights). One person’s favorite show is another person’s piece of trash-TV.
My personal feeling: If you don’t like what’s playing on the TV, CHANGE THE CHANNEL!
I don't like smoking around people who don't smoke. I am very conscious when it comes to others. I smoke outside at home and at the office, but I do smoke in my vehicle. One day I will conquer the habit - I hope, before it's too late. But my whole immediate family either smokes or chews. You are very lucky to have sidestepped the habit. Curiosity and peers got me!
People usually start smoking at an early age. Watching parents and / or peers smoke can make it seem 'normal' or 'interesting'. But I know people who never touched a cigarette when their parents and peers smoked. On TV once in a while, no doesn't matter much. | |
