JOB ALSO, NOT A GOOD FIT FOR ME.....

I'll get right to the point of my situation....About 4 months ago I accepted a Permanent, Full Time job with a Financial Institution which I won't even name on this post...in case somebody I work with is reading this.  They don't know that I'm looking already.

The thing is I only took this job for the benefits it offered, although I'm not too thrilled about the pay, and the working conditions either.  This job is something I'm not planning to be in for a long time, because is not what I want to be doing with my life day in and day out.  Also, took the job because I was sick of temping, being bounced around all over the place, and getting nowhere without benefits.

My dilemma is that this Week I have an Interview with a highly respected, successful company with offices all over the world.  And, did I mentioned that I temped at this same company for almost a year, and was never hired.  And, now they're looking for someone for a 5-Month contract only.

Now, I know it sounds really dumb to even ask on this post for advice, but I really need to read others' opinions.  Even though I already know what I should do.

Should I leave my current permanent, full time job with benefits which I can't stand and put up with it, or go to the Interview, and take the 5-Month contract thru the temping agency which pays a lot more but no benefits, and then when the person I'm replacing comes back from her leave of absence I'm left in the cold again, looking for another temping gig.  Or, should I even bother going to the Interview at all?

Please give me your thoughts...It's most appreciated!      shocked

Sounds like an all too familiar song people ( me included ) sing.

My dilemma is that this Week I have an Interview with a highly respected, successful company with offices all over the world.

Every company has offices all over the world, no big deal.

And, did I mentioned that I temped at this same company for almost a year, and was never hired.  And, now they're looking for someone for a 5-Month contract only.

No you didn't mention it.  But it doesn't matter, it sounds like you're looking for them to hire you permanently, if they had a job like that, they'd offer it, but the 5-month assignment is all they're interested in offering, so if you want to grab it, grab it.

You say this is a company you already workred with for almost a year/

You say this is a new 5-month opportunity.

Although you have a permanent job, it doesn't compare in pay or benefits to the temp position.

From your perspective, look at it as the proverbial  1+1+1 effect.  Although there's no guarantee (#1) you'll get noticed for having previously worked almost working a year or (#2) get hired for a permanent position based on the 5-month job, therefore you should leave the other job you have and interview for the one offered.

What is it that they say : risk is part of the business

Given the history, you're in a much better position to get what you want than starting from scratch somewhere else, or staying where you are being unhappy.

This is a decision only you can make, shadow, nobody else.

Look at what you consider to be most important to you.  Money?  Benefits?  Temp work?  Permanent work?  Etc.  Stability?  Constant uncertainty?

Do you want to go from temp job to temp job and probably having unemployment in between and that unemployment could be long considering the economy?  For the most part, employers are looking for someone stable and not someone who appears to be a job hopper, unless of course, the person has the luxury of doing so (i.e. spouse who wants to bring in additional money to a family who already has a spouse working and doesn't need benefits).

And no, not every company is going to have offices all over the world.   Very large ones do, but I would say more companies do not.

Have you given this opportunity every chance?  Have you looked into other opportunities within this financial institution?  Have you inquired to your boss about getting more responsibility?  There are things you can do to change your current situation if you are just a little patient, proactive and speak up.

Sounds like you are more interested in the money and don't think benefits are important.  What happens when you do need one or more of those benefits and you decided to take the temp job and don't have the benefits anymore?  Just one of the many questions to ponder about what decision to make.

Just remember, no job is forever.  You can't wait and expect an employer to mold your career and your job -- it's up to you to make it the job you want it to be.  That means being proactive, taking the initiative and speaking up.  That has worked for me several times in the past.

Penguin & xoxo,

Of course, benefits are the most important thing to me right now.  And, even though is not the job of my dreams....I have stuck it out for the sake of benefits and because it's permanent.

Anyway, I went to the Interview with this huge company I told you about - And, yes I know a lot of companies have offices all over the world.  I just don't want to mention the name of it because it might give me away on this poster.   And, I want to keep it confidential as possible.

As I was saying, went to the interview and right away I got turned off...because the people I had to interview with, didn't even pick up the phone when the security guard annouced me in.  They didn't even tell the Agency at which building they were at.  So, there I was waiting 'til they got a hold of somebody.  And, I purposely got there 20 minutes early for the interview, so not to miss it.

Well, I've decided to just hang in there 'til I find a more stable, long-term, permanent job with benefits - and, this is what's more important to me.  tongue

Even though you have already made this decision is there anything redeemable with the current company that you can turn into a long term positive?  Cant you tell someone in like another six months that you dont feel challenged and you would like to be considered for other duties or positions ?  I wouldnt leave a perm job for a temp one - no way - but thats just me and only something that you can decide as others pointed out.  But I have been at the ground floor of companies that I worked for and they turned out to both be 10 and 8 yer jobs because I asked for and received more pay as well as more duties and I more or less made the jobs more interesting but the companies were good ones to begin with

Good luck

uwishtoo,

The company  I work for is a public place in which I have to deal with the public on a daily.  And, basically I don't feel I'm being challenged enough.  All my other jobs have been at a desk with a computer and phone.  This one is not...I mean I have a computer but no desk or phone.  And, even if I ask for something else to do, they don't have it.

At times, barely 10 people show up throughout the day...how boring!

shocked

Ahh ok - well good luck in fiding something else if that is what you decide to do but just for me I wouldnt leave in such a short time - tough it out and then job search - a year at least if you can
