Should I Stay or Should I GOHELP!

Hi,

I need some answers.........please!  Ok, here it goes.  My company is in a deep hole.

Our finances are at an all time low and I don't see them getting any better.  I am a Sr. Buyer

with a company and the only person in my dept.  We are basically running on a skeleton crew.

The workload is overwhelming.  Everyone is wearing 10 hats since they keep laying people

off and expect everyone to take on more responsibilities.  We had a meeting this morning

about how we are going to pay our vendors.  Most of our accounts are 90-120 days past

due and we are on credit hold w/all of our major suppliers.  I have been interviewing

and one of the job opportunities. sounds good and promising but I am still waiting for

an offer.  Question is, I feel guilty.  The President has asked everyone to hang on and

when we get through this he will reward everyone, I assume financially.  I got a .25 raise

last yr. and probably nothing this year.  The product is good but our sales team SUCKS!

The President is worried about everyone starting to jump ship.  I want to be loyal but

I feel I must look out for my own welfare first.  Should I hang in there or keep on interviewing

for a new position somewhere else.  He thinks I'm on board this sinking ship but in reality

I am actively looking for something else.  I have been there alittle over the year and cannot

see this company turning around anytime soon.  Any advice from anyone???  Should I hang on?

I know he will be furious if I leave because I am the only person in the purchasing dept.

The other two people were laid off.

Thank-you!!!  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Get out while you're still employed, and seemingly more marketable because of it. Don't feel guilty... at all. You need to look out for yourself. He won't care one bit whether or not you're furious if/when he lays you off.

Why should you go down with the ship? What kind of reward did he give the people he laid off?

If you leave, it's not your fault they're without somebody in purchasing. They laid the other two people off. If he's furious with you, it's because he spends too much time thinking about himself. You're not his property, and you're not bound to servitude with his company.

Just give him two weeks notice, and if he has a problem with it, let him know that's two weeks he has to call back the two people that were laid off and brought back up to speed by you.

This is a no-brainer!  GO!

Good luck!

Do you really need to ask?  If you can find something take it.  Chances are high he won't be around to reward anyone next year.  While loyalty to an employer is nice and a good thing, you have to be smart too.  It is a HUGE gamble to stick with this sinking ship.

Go.  There is no reward.  If the company has investors or shareholder, they have to be paid first.  And then the vendors.  And then the president will take his cut and then the workers might get any crumbs that are left at the table.  But you're still employed so use this to trade up instead of looking for the same or less  somewhere else.

Never let a company tug at your heartstrings.  I worked at a place where the CEO begged us all to trust him during a buyout bid and offered a $15,000 bonus to anyone who stayed until the end of the year.  I had already given notice that August since I was flying overseas but everyone took him up on his offer.  In November half of the staff was laid off and the other half were stripped of their benefits and senority and forced to take a cut in pay.  But they did get their $15,000, provided they completed their 90 day probation for the new company, which apparently did their best to encourage them to look elsewhere.  A year later the company was shut down and they were all let go without severance.  The only person who still had a job was the CEO who was made a senior VP at the parent company.

Did he feel good about screwing people who had been so loyal and unselfish?  Probably not.  But he was certainly rewarded handsomely for it.  I'm sure he told himself every night that it was just business, nothing personal.  You should be doing the same.

Kim,

Like the previous posters said, look out for yourself since no one else will.  You're on the Titanic and you will not be rescued unless you do this yourself. In this business climate everyone is fair game and everything is always chaotic anyway. Protect yourself first.

Who cares if this guy is upset with you? He won't be there for you when this company tanks and you are out of work and out of money. He will still have money and resources and a place to live. Will you?

If anyone there has any common sense, he/she is already seeking somewhere else to work. I can tell you that staying on a sinking ship and thinking that it can be OK if you put more effort into it simply is not true. You can't fix this by yourself and no one would thank you if you did.

Thank-you so much for your feedback.  I feel much better about packing my bags

and going!  I have been on an interview already and have two scheduled for next week.

Dazed and Confused was right, he will still have a home and money -and not give a thought

to me and my future.  Wish me luck as I hope to move on to bigger and better things!!!!!!
