I used to love my job....
But I don't now. This is more of a rant then anything, so if you don't want to read a big long rant about some chick you don't know, then please by all means avert your eyes. A little bit ago, I temped for this company. I am making an ok amount, about 23k a year which, from someone coming from a very small town is a lot, and isn't bad for a girl with no degree. So I'm temping right, loving my job. The pay is nice, I don't have to do a lot, the people are okay, and the people in the "outside" (aka non-customer service people) don't look at me like I'm a worthless piece of trash. Hey I worked customer service in a variety of different places and this one, so far, is the best. Fast forward to last December. My boss leaves for some medical emergency, and I get stuck here as just me and Girl #1. Well, Girl #1 decided this would be a really good time to just stop working. So from December through February, she slept after 5pm when everybody left (I work 3-midnight). So, there was me and another girl up until 7pm then it was just me. After 7pm it was usually ok because call volume dropped significantly. No biggie. But...as time progressed, Girl #2 that left work at 7pm...got fed up with the office cliques and left. So from 5-midnight it was me and sleepy Girl#2. I comlained. And complained. And complained. Nothing got done. I even took pictures with my camera phone of her sleeping at her desk, the queue lights, and what I had to do. Finally, something got done. They fired her. So grats me, I get to work from 5pm to midnight, by myself. This is all with my boss coming in periodically. Fast forward some. They get Girl #3 to work until 9pm. That's heavenly. I'm overjoyed. However, my boss (who has come back) decides he just wants to go insane with the loss of his father. I don't know how to feel about this, as he is now coming in maybe 3 days out of the week. Is a shame when we can make bets on whether he comes to work and/or stays the entire shift. So instead of doing his work, or helping us with any work at all, he decides it's a good idea to just lay stacks of papers (that used to be his responsibility) on my desk for me to do. Needless to say, I'm pissed about this. Keep in mind that before December there used to be another woman here who was doing about the same thing, doing his tasks, doing a lot of the work, coming in and staying late like I am when needed, etc. But she was a "senior service rep". i asked, when she left, if I was going to get that position....I was told no. Now I'm doing her work, for none of her pay, and without the title. This is where I believe I became pissed. So now, fast forward to the present. We have newbies at work, I train them. My boss sits there. The new guy (who is very good and I'm glad we have him, he's a great kid) wants to do more work, but they won't train him, instead throwing everything at me. I am pissed, I want more money and I want a new title. I know they won't give it to me. I even tried. A position came open that was perfect for me....doing half of what I do now, but specializing in the one thing that I do, and doing the technical aspects of it which I would love and have expressed wanting to do. I applied for it, got told "oh we opened this too early, we'll let you know!" I waited another 3 months, saw it again. Applied for it. Got told, "oh no, sorry, human resources said you can't take the position because you haven't been here long enough." I was there for 2 years when I asked. The person they gave it to had little idea of how the software worked. In other words, they created that position, just for her to be in it. I like this company. I want to move to another position on the "outside". But, I want to learn to tolerate my job again before I lose my mind and quit. I used to be a job hopper. I don't want to hop anymore. Next job I get I want it to be within this company, or in another state when I move! I dunno I just needed to get this out I guess If you've been there 2 years, you're not job hopping if you find something else somewhere else. It sounds like it is time to look. Don't quit until you have something else in hand. It is MUCH easier to find something when you have something. And your reason for leaving is either to get a better shift, to do something more challenging, to move up... depending on what you apply for. Good luck! Tess Why on earth do you like this company? If you transfer to another department, it's not going to be better. Sounds like terrible management from top to bottom, and they don't really care about temps. Is the new guy who'se not being trained doing what you did initially (before getting your boss's paperwork)? If so, do you have a few minutes here and there to train him? Or is he trainable by hearing how you do the phone work? That might help somewhat. But it sounds to me like you need to get out of that company. You're not going to have any advancement as they need you right where you are. Look for a reputable company that would love to have you and your skills. They're around. You just have to look carefully while you continue working. If you're on 2nd shift, you can look during the day. If you are still a temp, call the agency and find out if something better is available. Stop wasting 1/3 of your daily life and don't sell yourself short.
I ask myself why I'm here still too. Why do I like this job? The perks that I can't even access because I haven't been here for long enough? The only thing I really like is the fact that I get cheaper gas while working here. Oh and benefits. But benefits generally come with every job nowadays. I think it's mostly due to the fact that whenever I go to look up jobs, I see "4 year degree needed" blah blah, and I ...don't have one. I will in 4 years...but if I stay here for another 4 years I'll lose my mind. I already regret getting up every day. Finding a job out there that allows you to actually make over $20k with no degree is going to be a very hard struggle, that is NOT customer service (I really honestly can't do it anymore...sitting on the phone for hours on end...) but if I don't at least try to look I think I'll be worse off than if I don't look. Sorry to say this BUT your company thinks of you as a SAP! They know you are not going to quit and you come cheap too. No new position, no new duties, you cover when the boss is out and you have done well in the current situation. If I were you, I would be looking for another job. | |
