Long but need to vent and ask

Ok, here goes - I will try and keep this rather short but lots of things here.  I relocated from Illinois to Arizona in March and got out here and after interviewing for a few weeks I had 4 solid job offers.  Three of them lower paying and I took the higher one due to the talk I had with the hiring manager and I just hitting it off and having the same type of work ethics and thoughts on my career.  These were all direct hire positions and I was a full fledged employee, not a contract person, though I did go through a head hunter to get the job and they had a contract but it was for my FEE not my employment time.  She and I outlined a good path for me on how she wanted me to come in and then move for the future.  All good so far.  Soooo I get in there after waiting a few weeks for HR to do their thing and my first day my hiring manager/supervisor introduced me around the department and clearly spelled out to the others what they were to hand over to me in way of work and duties.  It took a few days for me to get all my computer access so I sat and read the desk manuals and procedures.  On the third day of employment I noticed my boss over at her desk grabbing her purse and looking like she was leaving for the day so I went over and said goodbye to her for the day but was shocked when she gave me her home number and informed me that she had just QUIT!  She gave 3 weeks notice but due to her poor relation with the CFO (who had only been there for three weeks before me) he told her to just leave so she did.  Well, when she left I found out quickly that the other girls in the department - yes girls, since I have more years in my career than all 3 combined - but it quickly became clear that they hated her - I had already heard one of them tell the boss that it was "none of your f***** business" when asked where she had disappeared to for 4 hours the day before without telling anyone.  I asked my CFO what her leaving meant to me and I told him that I had not yet begun my training with anyone and that no job duties had been turned over to me since I just got computer access.  He told me not to worry, nothing had changed and my training would go as planned and to give him an outline of what had been laid out for me to do.  I did that and then never heard a word of feedback - so there I sat for weeks with nothing to do and I mean NOTHING !  8 hours of reading a book, doing some filing for one of the other gals, and that was ALL I had to do.  No accounting work and certainly nothing to do at my level of senior accountant.  Weeks turned into months literally - 3 months in total.  I finally started to look for another job - the CFO totally ignored all of my requests for work and never spoke more than 5 words to me the whole time I was there.  I started getting close to the one older gal in the office and she confided in me and shared with me some very nasty and vicious emails that had been passed around about me - my looks, the way I dress ( I always wear a nice dress and heels) - many emails calling me an old lady (I am almost 50) - and that the other girls were NEVER going to give me any of "their" work to do.  I have all the emails in my possession right now actually.  So after 2.5 months my CFO called me into his office and tells me that they have no work for me - al the while he brings in an acting manager on a consulting level who in turn brings in his OWN contract people doing the same work I was supposed to be doing.  The guys all knew each other over the years and they were from the same consulting firm. I asked the CFO what the past 2.5 months had been for ?  Why was I brought in and then summarily ignored?  he just kept saying that the work wasn't there.  So I said ok see ya.  To cover their butts he did allow me to "work" for the next 2 weeks and then give me one week severance past that.  For the next two weeks I came in and clocked in (I was salary but still had a clock in thing to prove when were in the office) and then I would leave and go on interviews for other jobs.  I had a job within 3 days of my last day with this place.  The whole time I was there the CFO had repeatedly been contacted by the head hunter to ask about the status of the invoice for my fee - he ignored all emails and all voicemails from her UNTIL he let me go.  Then he called her and said well, gee, I think the fee should be waived since she isn't staying the full 90 days - again I had no contract for my employment conditions, the only contract that existed was between him and the head hunter that said if I left within 90 days they would replace me for free.  But he never paid the fee at all!  When I did the math and looked at the calendar, sure enough, my last day with them was 88 days !!   Then the kicker is that he told me to feel free to apply for other jobs on the internal board and I found several that I was more than qualified for and as soon as I expressed interest they ALL disappeared!  I talked to the HR manager and he assured me that I was merely being laid off due to lack of work - but its bull because they could have kept me in the company and not having me work for the CFO - which I didn't want to do anyway - but because that would have meant me staying past 90 days they would have been forced to pay the fee.  I am not sure of the status if they paid it yet or not.  So I never stood a chance at any of the other open jobs and they knew it when they told me to apply for them.

But here is my question and dilemma - I have all the emails that clearly show personal attacks on me and admitting from the day my hiring manager walked out that the girls were all going to ignore me and refuse to give me any work to do AND the CFO was in one some of these emails.  Do I turn them into their compliance place and file a formal complaint?  Do I get a lawyer?  What?  I got screwed out of 3 other great jobs and while I have one now the pay is good but the location is less than ideal in terms of commute and I had really counted on working for the other place for a long time at a very high rate of pay.  Would it do any good to report this and be a whistleblower?  (Their terms not mine since they have a whistleblower hotline) The company really needs to know how shady their CFO and department is on the whole, I feel.  The girls in there are all butt kissers and that is why the CFO loved them and never gave me a chance - they ran their mouth on their personal opinion of me to him and influenced him all the way AND he also didn't like me cause he just knew that I was not going to kiss his butt - I was in there to work and redefine that department, which was what I was hired to do.  Oh and since my employ

Unfortunately I don't think there is anything you can do.  The personal attacks are not really anything that you can address from a legal standpoint, I don't think (Tess may weigh in on this one if she sees it).

Clearly they are sleazy but I don't think they have done anything illegal.

you dont think the top people of the company need to know how this guy is running people away and refusing to pay for contracts that he has signed ?  It sucks for me espeicailly due my pride in not job hopping and now he created one more blip on my resume

UWT,

Is there any chance of re-contacting the other companies you interviewed with and letting them know that this was not a good fit? To say the least, that company has many problems. The outlook for that office is relatively scary at best. It sounds like a total mess.

Is it really worth it for you to bother with this ridiculous employer and this dysfunctional situation? The scenario you describe is not worth dealing with and thank your good fortune you are away from it. Would you want to have to continue to go there, knowing what it is? Seems to me that this place is not worth your time or effort.

You were not there very long and I would bet that you could skip putting it on your resume. Why bother with following up in this instance? If you had been there for years and had a personal investment in the company, then the stakes would be much higher. As it is, why not blow this off and go on with your life?

Hi uwishtoo,

Consider yourself very lucky to be out of such a terrible work environment! You did nothing wrong, and I'm sure the employees who were ignorant enough to send such hostile emails throughout the office about you will get theirs. You can write a letter to the company, but given the manner in which you were treated, it may not be a good idea. I doubt that you would here from them anyway.

If a prospective employer should ever question you about why you left after only 88 days, just tell them the truth, you were working in a hostile environment, you have he email to prove that. When you were hired, I'm sure the children in that place were intimidated by your skills, obviously they have none. Try and put this behind you, I know that is easier said than done. I am sorry you had to go through such a rotten experience.

Best of luck to you!

tb:)

Uwishtoo,

I'm sorry you had to go through this. Many people know how it feels to be treated in such ridiculous way in the workplace. I would focus on your future and put this experience completely behind you.

For your sense of justice: to whistleblow would only help when management doesn't cover things up. It would also cost a lot of negative energy to deal with this legally, it could take a long draining time. For information what your options are, I would call around and inform whether your evidence is sufficient to win.

Take care,

Jones

thanks for the input -- sigh - lol - I didnt mention anything about the work environment when I went on interviews - it would just look like i was being negative and had something to hide so i just said it was a contract position that ended at the 90 day mark

Did the same Uwishtoo, lol - and I can't even imagine why people do such things. Never about work..

Hey uwishtoo-

WOW-I have had some pretty crappy experiences in accounting, but this one...it takes the cake. Although it shouldn't surprise me, someone of your caliber and experience to be treated this way....all I can say is that I am truly sorry you have had to deal with this.

Why can't you file a grievance under the guise of whistleblower? You would be protected by law. Your good reputation may be at stake, though. I'd hate for you to take a stand on ethics, only to have it backfire. At the same time, that whole situation is WRONG from the word go. -Sorry, I am on the fence between standing up for justice and career assassination.

You can claim defamation of character, especially with those emails. If you ask me, I'd get a hold of the president/owner, or, even better, The Board of Directors. I am sure the shareholders of the company would be interested in how their "investments" are being utilized. I would make a call to find out the information you need, yet send traceable correspondence and copies of those emails as proof.

I guess if anything good can come from this, it would be to alert the powers that be that you know and they know they have issues.  Chances are they probably already know and are ignoring it, but depending on the size of the company, there could be a lot that the folks up at the top don't know.

Anyway, I am sure you know what to do without my opinions. I just wanted to give you a little support.

Peace,

TG

I suspect that they do know unfortunately.  I have been in similar situations and at the end of the day it just isn't worth it.  Feels bad, I know.  But really there is little you can do legally and morally if they don't play by the same standards and rules then you will simply be beating your head against a wall; in the end you will have nothing to show for it but a bloody forehead.

I wish that there was something more you could do, I just don't think there is.
