In over my head

Hi everyone...

Well recently I took a new job in Arizona working for a company in their environmental department.  Big move from Wisconsin.  It's only been about a month, but it's been an uphill battle.  I never knew how difficult it was to get things set up when it's just me.  My fiancee won't be here until the end of the year because of her obligations.

Anyway, the job has not been what I was lead to expect.  The person that interviewed me (whom was going to be my supervisor) is no longer here.  He left about a month before I got here and no one told me.  I was told the first day of orientation.  There are a few consultants the company hired to keep this department going but they won't be here forever.  This person whom I thought was going to be my boss had been here for over 20 years.  Imagine trying to go through tons of files and paperwork to figure out how things are supposed to be done, what reports need to be sent in to government agencies etc.  It has been a total mess.  When I was hired on, I was supposed to be doing the environmental monitoring...now I am doing that and the administrative side which is wearing me out.  They have been dragging their feet on hiring the senior person, so I'm not sure when that is going to happen.

Things with bonus, pay increases were not exactly how they spelled them out in the interview either.

I can't just up and leave.  I want to be able to stick it out for a while to see if things get better but right now it feels like I am being fed to the wolves.  Sorry just needed to vent.

Consider this your baptism of fire.  If you get through this, you'll be able to handle anything.  Document what you're doing and why, to use as experience for your next job (you don't want to forget any details of how you are going above and beyond your job duties, etc.).

Good luck!

Welcome to AZ - sounds like my "baptism by fire" since March in moving out here.  Different culture out here from the midwest huh ?

Good luck and all you can do it hang in there and do your best.  I am sure if you made it this far it is just a downhill ride from here !

Arizona has definitely been a shock to the system.  I flew down on the 5th and started work on the 9th.  Been real fun trying to get situated and putting up with the stress of the job.

I am planning on giving it about 6 months.  If things don't start getting better, I will start the job hunting again.  Honesty by HR would have been nice.

I love some of the changes over the midwest while others I am just stunned by - the lack of respect for jobs overall out her and the job hopping.  But - and this is a woman thing I realize - if I never see a pair of panty hose again it will be too soon !  winkwinkwink  I am just now getting used to going to work in slacks and capris and tank tops - at almost 50 years old my closet is way too midwestern and just too stuffy - back there I was considered sharp dressed but here I am just overdressed.  But ya aint getting my 4 inche heels - no way no how.

But I will say I am still amazed at every morning driving to work and seeing the mountains and thinking WOW I Live here now - but then again I could have done without the dust storm and then the flooded streets tonite - ugh

Good luck !
