How To Apply Cologne

That's right!  "How To Apply Cologne" is the title of this Thread.  Time and time again on most of these Forums, including the previous ones, tongueMembers have complained about the strong odor of perfumes and colognes in the workplace.tongue  These people do not mean to be inconsiderate; they simply do not know how to apply the stuff, and I believe that mostly older women have a problem with this:

Absolutely!

It is quite common for employees to complain about co-workers who lay it on a little thick.  Older women often have a tendency to over-apply.   I know a woman whose health condition caused her to lose her sense of smell.  I know another who slathered it on at her desk; the odor nearly choked the rest of us.  One person posited that she was attempting to mask the odor of cigarette smoke.  It didn't.

Some people are allergic to perfumes, etc., and simple common courtesy dictates that if you work with another who is allergic, forgo the smelly stuff; save it for social occasions or church where the collective scents practically overpower everyone but God.

We had this discussion numerous times on the older Forums.  Most of us agreed that the strong stench of cologne and perfume on employees, both female and male, was overpowering and annoying.  People are allergic to perfume and have severe reactions.  I have had headaches and have been tempted a number of times to say something to the coworker(s).  When this odor mixes with body odor and cigarettes, it is disgusting and proof of lack of consideration for the rights and comfort of other people.

All workplaces should adapt a "fragrance-free" workplace policy and make it stick just like all of them no longer allow cigarette smoking in the workplace.

Some will still use perfume but if it is not detectable to others - fine!  If anyone is bothered by the smell, he or she should not get into an argument or confrontation with the user but speak with the supervisor and be emphatic about it.  Otherwise - nothing will change!

When I apply my perfume I spray it into the air and walk through it.  I have never been accused of having too much perfume on.

Men should apply it differently, It should be applied directly after shaving and VERY SPARINGLY applied to the throat area.

What about a person that does not bath (I mean smells worse than dog #### and bad foot odor put together) and then tries to cover it up with nasty smelling cologne ~ YUCK ~ I work with one of these guys, and trust me you can not insult him into bathing, I've tried!

Amen, Bunzy! Thank you for the reminder. It's funny how we are all aware of common corporate courtesy, yet it quickly gets forgotten.

Welcome back, TG!

How have you been?

Bunzo, thank you for posting the link for "How to Do Things".

smileAfter reading the instructions regarding cologne, I checked out the rest of the site and it looks like there is a lot of useful information there!

I have some advice on this subject.  How NOT to apply cologne.  Don't apply so much that people end up gasping for air when you come in close contact with them!  A little bit goes a long way!  There are people who suffer from allergies and asthma.  I too have allergies and mild asthma.  One whiff of strong and stinky cologne usually makes me sneeze, cough, and wheeze.  I don't want to be harsh, but please have some consideration for folks with allergies and breathing problems.tongue

Hey B-

I am ok. Had ups and downs, as usual, but overall I am fine. Mom is still in remission.

Had some down time and decided to visit and see what has been going on. Same stuff. Maybe I can interject some 'trollisms'(the good helpful kind) while I am here.

Hope you are doing well smile . Glad you remembered me.

All the Best to You,

TG

I guess I am lucky my Mom has allergies so I am use to going perfume free.  I love good perfume but just got out of the habit of wearing it except on a night out with hubby.

But one trick I did learn that works really well if you just really want to wear some and you have a favorite.  Go to the store and ask for the testers, you know the little ones that look like handy wipes.  Dab on wrist, elbow, back of neck.  Because they are intended to be light they don't overpower.

I don't wear cologne I wear perfume.  I requires less and stays longer.  Pulse points and very little necessary to carry the scent all day.  Oddly, in the long run it is cheaper this way also.

But my whines are scented candles in the work place.  Please stop.  Some of these smells are so overwhelming they make me want to cry.  Patchouli, I was hoping to never smell this again after the 70's.  Rainwater, nope doesn't smell like that.  Spring Day, don't know whose nose they used or what Spring day - but not in my neck of the woods.  In what universe do you live where you thought making your office smell like apple pie everyday was a good thing?

Finally, is it really necessary for me to know what you had for lunch today?  Can you not consider brushing your teeth or at least sucking a mint?  Ewwww.
