over qualified

Why is it that when you tell a potential employer that you are going back to school they assume you may be over quailfied for a job? This same thing just happened to me recently.  It's not right nor fair.  Thanks for letting me vent!!

That might have happened at your place, but might not happen someplace. Maybe your boss, supervisor, or managers lack the necessary degrees and education, so they think you'll get their job(s) once your finished. Sure it ain't fair.

It costs a lot of money to replace workers, so employers want people who will stay in the jobs once they're trained.  I'm sure they are thinking that you will move on to something else as soon as you finish your schooling.  If you can address this issue in your interviews, it might help.

If I were hiring someone, that's what I would be concerned about.

Isn't it amazing how some employers feel threatened by somone returning to school to better themselves?  I'm sorry they feel you might be over qualified or that you might not stay with them long.

In my humble opinion, if I were the potential employer, I would ask you what your goals were and what you were looking for in a career before telling you, you are over qualified.  I don't know if your further education would have benefited that particular company you were applying at, but if it was relevant to the position you were applying for, it certainly would have been a plus.

Some companys will even pay for your education if you maintain a "B" average and agree to work for them for a certain amount of time after you finish your education.  That way you both win.  You get your education and they get a qualified employee for a certain amount of years, maybe 2 years or so.  And the schooling and work don't have to be relevant to each other.

If I had been that potential employer I would have asked more questions to see if you were a fit.  They are the losers in this scenario.

Why?  Because this country hates smart people.

Yeah, smart people (or should I say "informed people") can be considered a threat to somebody somewhere.
or in my case - I already have my accounting degree as far as I care to go at my age anyway and 25 years experience - it will continue to be my career path - but for the retirement years I have decided to pursue a degree in psych - I got so sick of people saying well you arent wanting to stay in accounting so we arent interested in your resume - I was like uh who the heck said I was changing careers ?  I finally took it off my resume and just dont mention it at all - my last employer found out and FREAKED
