Employers who change the agreement!

This is a true vent in which I know there is no good answer but I am ready to pop today.

When did it become completely acceptable for a company to hire a person under certain terms; salary, benefits, hours of work etc and then after they are employed (or throughout their employment) decide to completely change the agreement?  The employee took the position based upon certain terms and agreed for those terms to provide certain services but in this agreement, one party is allowed at a whim to change their terms.  Why is okay for them to cut your pay, your benefits and make you work more hours on the basis of "if you don't like it go somewhere else?".  The employee doesn't have the right to come in one day and say "hey, you know I've decided that I no longer want to do this-or-that".   They would be laughed at.  It is non-negotiable.  Yes, I understand that most employment is not a contract and "at-will" but it is out of control.

Yes, I am frustrated today because so far this year we have had our insurance changed significantly and now they have told us that we MUST work 12 hour days AND they are have decided to drop our minimum guaranteed quarterly bonus.  I am looking for something else but in the meantime, everytime I interview someone to work for us I just want to quietly tell them....run away.

Since the first boss hired the first worker.

This job is driving me nuts.  Usually, I'm pretty even keeled, understanding that life's not fair but this year has taken me to a new level.  Now, I'm paranoid that there are no good companies out there because everyone is telling me they are going through the same thing.  Well, at least I have a job though, it could be worse.

It's the economy and the way of business.  First of all, regardless of what is said about it, bonuses should never be considered guaranteed ever.

As for insurance, it is getting more and more expensive for the employer and it is being passed on so the employee makes more of a contribution.  Insurance costs are astronomical.  We went to a high deductible plan a couple of years ago.  It's happening at a lot of places.

Good luck trying to find something better.

Yes, the word "bonus" isn't exactly a good title for this added amount we get every quarter since it is not based upon the office's performance but it was stated in my offer letter as guaranteed which of course really means "guaranteed until we decided we don't want to pay it anymore".
