Completely off guard when fired

Through the course of time, I've seen some doozies posted on here, lol.  The "Fax" incident is the one that sticks...the guy who posted that a co-worker of his gave him a document to fax, with a sticky not with the fax number on it, and simply just "faxed it" to that number, then gets called on the carpet and gets fired for that very reason, even though it was not his fault.

I was just curious, why are there so many incidents like this.

ALSO, how many hear that have been caught COMPLETELY off-guard when they got fired (not laid off..but fired). I mean, were  you literally SHOCKED?

I know alot of people, when they are fired, they usually have that feeling, that month or 2 before the firing where incidents have occured that LEAD to that point.

Heck, even in unemployment compensation applications, they have a box to check where it says, "When you were let go, where you EXPECTING it?"

Considering all this "right to work" crap.

I mean, I hear guys on here here sa ying they had good evaluations and praise from their bosses, but.....month later they get fired.

Is there any explanation as to why bosses do this?

Every situation is different.  There is no single explanation that fits everybody and his current issues.

We are supposed to give everyone the benefit of the doubt who posts here about problems on the job, but there are always two sides to every story.

More firings than ever probably take place because they can.  The bosses are not held accountable and can fire people for any reason or no reason and sometimes just on a whim.

Many fired employees probably have lived in denial during their tenure.  They did not see the warning signs or they trivialized them.  They did not want to face the possibility that their jobs were in jeopardy.

Personally speaking - every time I was fired or laid off, I was expecting it.  In a very few isolated cases, I wondered why it took them so long to swing the axe!

Okay - there's one exception and I am going to look for my story about that incident and post it here.  It's on the previous Forums.

I found the Link.  It is on the first and original Monster.com Forum for Contract and Temporary Workers.  I was definitely not expecting such a negative outcome.  I had rejected a permanent job offer for a very small business to take this long-term temporary job at the local utility company:

Office politics comes to mind.  You never know who may be undermining you behind the scenes.

In many cases the employee was hearing what they wanted to hear and not reading the signs.   In some cases there was a specific incident that broke the camel's back.  We had to fire my assistant last year.  She didn't expect it and my boss and I didn't expect it.  She violated a policy and we were told we had to let her go, no exceptions.  Now, should she have seen it coming?  Probably, because she knew she was doing something risky, but I'm sure it came as a big shock to her.

I'd say at least 75% of the posts on these boards about this topic where the poster is shocked and awed, it usually comes out that there were other things going on and that there were clues there if they chose to read them.

In major layoffs, those can often come without any or much forewarning.

Hi MonsterReader,

"Also, how many hear that have been caught COMPLETELY off-guard when they got fired(not laid off..but fired). I mean, were two literally shocked?"

About six years ago I was fired from an administrative position for a large medical practice. I had worked with two of the physicians for more than 10 years. I was hired by this group after the physician I worked for retired, I had been with him for a very long time. Anyway, I was asked to come in and "clean up" the Business Office after the previous administrator totally messed up. I worked for this practice for six years, and in that time I brought their AR down 75%, recovered over $45.000.00 in unpaid work comp claims and auto accident cases, re-organized the business office to expedite insurance payments, etc., and wrote employee manuals for each position in the office.

We had an office meeting on a Friday, I was told by the office manager to go over all problems with staff as they pertained to the Business Office. I did that, calmly and respectfully, and the staff were most cooperative. Monday I walked in and all the folders that were kept in my desk were dumped on top. I was fired by the CEO, not one word of explanation, nothing. I was given severance pay and accrued vacation. I do have the satisfaction of knowing that after I left, the entire staff in the front office and business office quit. Turns out they fired me because I was the highest paid employee, (With the exception of the office manager.) I was replaced by the office manager's daughter. She lasted 3 weeks.

Oh gee, didn't mean to ramble on like that, sorry!

Dogbert, exactly ! Noticed that more than once, sometimes it also was overt -> shocking that gossip and insinuations were accepted without verification.

I was fired and I was written up repeatedly over a 10 year period too. Let me explain. I had some family issues I was responsible for. During this time, I applied for several positions within the company I knew I was more than qualified for. Yet, my company went outside the company and hired someone else. Well, two of these people were caught stealing from our clients and were fired.

It upset me to the point where I didn't care any more. I still gave my clients 100% but when it came to my company, I could care less. I got into confrontations with my manager like not giving him any respect. He would shove his dirty work upon me to clean up and resolve.

We had a new manager who disliked me from day one. He used previous year's reviews to do my current year's review which I protested. He wrote me up one day saying I disobeyed his ordered. I could not defend myself from this reprimand. About 10 months later I did not process some paperwork and it was discovered that I was like 12 months behind. I did not process this paperwork because I was working three regional areas as a sales representative and I did not have the time to complete the paperwork. When I came back from vacation, I worked Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and at about 11:00am on Thursday I was called the personnel department by my manager.

I walk into the Personnel department and go to the meeting room. Sitting down is my manager and the HR manager. The HR manager has a stack of paperwork and my manager has a note pad in front of him. They sit me down and the HR begins to tell me that I am TERMINATED after 18 years with the company for not following departmental procedures. The HR manager knew me for over 18 years and knows I would never deliberately not do my job and that their had to be reasons why it was not completed. In addition, the HR manager knew I had issues with the manager. I told my manager I was overworked and needed someone to help me with the paperwork.

They paid my vacation time and sick time. Plus I was allowed to go on UI. But that sent me into a tail spin career wise. I will never forget that evil manager. Some day he will get his reward. Evil begets evil.

You got BOTH UI AND your severance, you l ucked out man, good for you!

In my case, my employer was doing everything in their power to deny me my 2,000 bucks in vacation and sick leave AND attempted to yank my UI, but the UI arbitrator sided with me,  when they found out the specifics of my termination.

That will be in another post.

No, Monster, I did not get severance. Severance is TWO weeks salary times 18 (years) or 36 weeks of my regular salary. I got what vacation and sick time I had accrued as of my termination date. BUT I lost out on my year end bonus and company paid 401k profit scharing contribution for that year.

I was getting married and my husband was working quite a ways from where I was living.  I had worked at my office for over four years and it was like my second family.  As it became clearer that eventually I would be moving, I let the owner of the company know that at some point I would be leaving (mistake!) but did not give an exact date BUT I would help him train whomever he wanted because know else knew how to do my job..  I went away for my honeymoon and the day I came back to work, I was called in and told that that day would be my last.  I was devastated.  I found out that during my honeymoon he had replaced me.  I was in the office manager's office crying (not professional, I know) and she said "but you quit".  I told her I did not quit, I wasn't even looking for another job or made any plans for moving yet.  Then she and the owner tried to get me to sign a letter of resignation, on which I made my own notation "I did not resign.  I did not give a last date of employment".  The owner asked the manager "can she do that?".  They tried to fight my UI saying I quit, but because they gave me two weeks of severance AND I made the notation on my forced letter of resignation, I was granted UI.
