this. It may save your life or love one's life.
PART I OF 2
Because of the recent abductions in daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation.........This is for you, and for your to share with your wife, your children, everyone you know.
9 CRUCIAL TIPS

1.) TIP FROM TAE KWON DO:

The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2.)If a robber asks for your purse and/or wallet, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM! Toss it away from you...chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse that you, and he will go for the wallet or purse.
3.) If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everyone else will. This has saved lives.
4.) Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc.) DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE. Something I do personally is unlock only the drivers side door, and I have a small flashlight that can really light up a dark area, use it to check the inside of your car in case someone has broken in, (There may not be visible signs of forced entry.)keep the flashlight on until you are safely locked in your vehicle.
5.) Always be aware of what is going on around you. Look under the car also, but do this as you are approaching your vehicle. If you are parked near a big van, a car with tinted windows, etc., enter your car from the passenger side door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars. Look at the car parked in the driver's side of you vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone, (I would add female here also) in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work and get a guard/policeman or a couple friends to walk you out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (AND BETTER PARANOID THAN DEAD.)

As a former reserve police officer, here are more advice women can use:

1.   When you carry your purse, only carry your essentials in your wallet. All you need is your driver license, a credit card and maybe a gas card. You do not have to store all of your credit cards in your wallet. Thieves will target you if they see you with a bill fold full of credit cards and cash. Keep only enough cash for that one shopping spree.

2.   Do not talk and walk around the store or to the car on a cellphone. A thief will see you are preoccupied and you will be an easy target for a theft commonly called grab and run.

3.    While driving, keep your eyes scanning behind you, to the sides of your vehicle and in front. If you feel someone is following, try to get the license number of the vehicle and the description of the driver who is following you. Drive to the nearest police station if possible. If not, drive to a place where there is a lot of people and if the person is still following you, pump the horn to get attention.

4.    Have your car key ready in your hand to open your car door. Be aware of who is around your vehicle. Walk at an angle to your car and look under it and to the sides of the car. If you see someone anywhere near your car that looks suspicious, do NOT go to your car. If you car has a panic alarm, hit it. That will scare off any attackers.

5.    If you live where there is any electronic gates that enclose your garage or entry way, keep a look out for people congregating around these areas. If you see anyone near these areas, do not open the gate. They may be waiting to gain access to your apartment complex. Call the police.

6.   CELLPHONE. Cellphones can be a life saver. Make sure your cellphones are always charged. Pre-program 911 in your cellphone and keep it accessible when you are in your car so that you can quickly call for help.

Thanks tango and OC.....very informative.  My boyfriend is a police officer and since he began his new position at a different precinct, he is reporting tons of purse-snatching.  The victims? ......predominately the older generation - little old ladies.  These criminals who are targeting them are cowards, to say the least.  I hope this message you two are sending will reach the elderly somehow.

From someone who knows -

  1. Keep your gas tank full.  Do not stop for gas after dark especially in cities!  No matter how well lit or busy the station is.
  2. If you grocery shop at night do not take your groceries out alone.  Ask for and wait for assistance.  Doesn't matter if you have to wait 5 minutes.
  3. Park under a light and even if you have to wait for a parking spot.
  4. Don't carry huge purse.  Carry your keys and your wallet in a pocket.
  5. Wear comforable shoes that you can run in.  I know you want to be cute, so what.  Either you have to be able to slip out of the cute high heels or you should be in running shoes.

One more thing:  If you are approached or attacked, MAKE A SCENE.  Yell as loud as you can and try to attract attention.  Leave your good manners at home.

And also - RUN AWAY!  Head for other people, a store, or any other lighted area.

The area I live in has been experiencing unexpected and unbelievable growth.  People here still think everything is safe.  They still leave doors unlocked, don't watch out for dangerous situations, and think crime is just in the big cities.  Unfortunately, crime has come here and people are being robbed, attacked and even killed.  It doesn't matter WHERE you live, you must be aware and careful.

WB

Yell as loud as you can and try to attract attention.  Leave your good manners at home.
Do not yell help but yell fire instead.  Studies have shown that while people will ignore a cry for help, they will respond to one about fire.

If for any reason a place, person, or situation creates a sensation of fear even though they seem normal enough, go with your gut instincts and leave.  Many times your subconscious picks up on the clues you normally miss.

I new there would be more excellent suggestions, thank you all for taking the time to post them! These came from a police officer, but you all added some wonderful suggestions that I didn't even think about. Please keep adding to the list if you have more info!

I thought of something that I did when my kids were in school, and when my grandson started school. I went online and pulled up the names of every sex offender within a 20 mile radiaus of the school. I was stunned at the number of petophiles that were living within three blocks of the school and the local park. Now these are those that have bothered to report. Be aware, and make your little ones aware.

TG, did you see the movie Face-Off with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage? I'll explain if you did, if you did, you know how to use a knife, lol!

tb

LOL, yes I did see the movie! Good analogy! I guess I still "got it"-lol!
