Leaving candidates in limbo

What's with potential employers who will not tell you that you DON'T have the job? They just leave you hanging, stop responding to emails, stop returning calls. If you call them they say they are still "thinking about it" or some other excuse, even if months have gone by, but they WON'T come out and just say NO. As I write this I can imagine a general reason this might happen is that they called a reference and heard something they didn't like, but what if you pre-called all of your references beforehand and they all said they were going to say great things and this still happened? Plus this has happened so many times it seems like some kind of new operating procedure?
Yeah its pretty lame. HR departments and recruiters act very unprofessional when it comes to call backs and such. They say they will call back at a certain time or let you know by a certain date, and they either call back much later or not at all. It sucks, but they know we really can't do much about it so they have the upper-hand.

I am an executive assistant.  One position I applied for and did not get had the new executive assistant send out an email to those of us who did not get the job.  She sent a mass email (at least 50 email addresses) and not bcc!  My email box was full for days from reply all emails giving this person an earful.  I took note of the work email addresses and sent my resume to those companies - as I was sure they were going to have an opening soon!  Note to self do not send resumes out from work email address!

I hope some of you gave the hiring manager an earful as well.

As irritating as it is to have your candidacy broadcast, the hiring manager thought this person would be better at the job than you.

Oops. Sometimes it really is the blind leading the blind.

Seriously! If you drop me a e-mail saying "thanks but no thanks, good luck." I will have so much more respect for that company than one that leaves me hanging!

The reverse of that is one company that strung me along for weeks with a phone interview, then the promise of a freelance gig that would lead to a full blown interview. The AD kept postponing the gig till after his jury duty, by then he responds "ohhh, yeah, by the way, the position is filled...feel free to hit me up in a few weeks to see if we have any more freelance opps!"

Thanks but no thanks!

Don't think the thought had not occurred to me also.  I was thankful in many ways that I was not offered the position (for one it would have been a pay cut).

Yes it would be nice to be updated on job status, but with the quantity of resumes being sent (most of which are not even close to being relevant to a job advertised ) I say give hr a break and set time limits for follow up, once the limit is past move on.

But vent away that's what we are here for - I just thought my example of feedback received might amuse.

I hate this. I am in the same situation. I went for an interview 5 weeks ago or so and haven't heard either way. They told me  they would let me know either way by the end of that week. I know I did a good interview. I also know I looked impressive. I wish they'd let me know either way. I also recently applied for a job I didn't get. The secretary sent out a mass mailing to those who weren't accepted. I thought this wasn't professional.
I had a similar experience Fox. That is worse. They keep extending things and 2-3 months later they dump you. I even used my own money to travel to an interview. I learned a good lesson that day. Never use your own money for traveling to interviews.
