How to find a job w/o prof. references

My boss likes to fire employees who express an interest in finding a new job at another company, and he doesn't like it when people give him 2 week notices - he wants them to give him notice that they are looking for a new job as soon as they post their resume online, so he can fire them right away instead of the day they give him the 2 week notice.

I am interested in finding  a new job, but I am worried that if I use my boss/supervisor as a professional reference, if the prospective employer calls them up, I can pretty much consider myself fired. As you'd imagine, I can't afford to get fired from my current job without first having another job lined up for me.

How can I go about finding a new job without giving professional references from my present employer? Do HRs understand this type of situation?

Have a list of references ready, both personal and professional, but do not allow potential employers to call anyone until you get a firm and definite job offer.

Stick to your guns.  You should not have to jeopardize your present job because you're looking for another job.

First off, there is a difference between "references" and checking out your resume/application info.  Do not use this guy as a reference.  A reference is someone who has worked with you, hopefully as a supervisor and can speak to your work skills.  That could be a co-worker.

They MIGHT check your employment info but most forms ask if they can check with your current employer.  You should check no.  If there's no box to check, you should say that your search is confidential until you have an offer because historically, your boss has immediately fired anyone that is looking.  That should cover it although there is always a small risk that someone doesn't pay attention and it gets out.
