Want a good job, work for the GovtMore than likely, the FEDERAL govt. I know some friends that are advocates of this (they work for the govt too) There was this one woman in our dept, was hired on for a year with the US Govt (was a contract worker at first , got her footin the door that way).....then proceeded to take a higher paying job, and gave up the federal job....of course the job paid about 10 grand more a year, but alot of people thought it was a mistake on her part. 1. I was told by employees, they hardly ever fire anyone 2. She gave up job security 3. The job that she was hired into could be out of business 2 years from now This one guy knew someone that worked with him in the govt, quit his job for a typical commercial job...now is regretting it becuase he got laid off. I know several people who have worked for various branches of the Federal Government. They received healthy raises, enjoyed flexible hours, worked hard but didn't kill themselves, very rare overtime, they had security, excellent benefits, some of the typical BS in every workplace, but overall, happier than people in other (local) govt. jobs and private sector. Given the 20/20 clarity of hindsight, I would have moved heaven and earth to get my foot in the federal job door in any capacity and would now be retired. I have heard that the US Postal service has great job security. Once a person passes the Civil Service exam and has a job, he/she can be set for life. I have worked for the federal government twice. Each time because I needed the job. First, the office politics are played with a viciousness that I have not seen anywhere else. Second, because of the politics, you have incompetent and/or apathetic people in high positions. You can imagine the kind of attitudes this fosters. This was so bad (and incredibly frustrating) that I left for other jobs. Third, job security is an illusion. They do not fire people, but they torture them out of the job -- saw this happen quite a few times. The only instance I saw of someone actually getting fired was my systems manager, but in his case, it was character assasination by someone who wanted his job. That snake got the job, BTW, but had to resign because he couldn't handle the duties or the stress. If anyone can thrive in such an environment, go for the federal job by all means. But if you like a workplace where you can count on people and where it is not extremely cut throat, stay away! Well then, my friends who work for the feds must be fortunate to be in the particular offices they are in; one, a US Marshall, enjoys great latitude and comradery at work; however, law enforcement is very different from other work environments. What you describe is pervasive at a levels of government. My work experiences with state, county, and municipal governmental entities involved the same political dynamics you describe. When they--employers-- cannot find or manufacture sufficient cause to justify terminating employees, all employers engage in the "torture them out of the job" method. It worked on me and I am better equipped than the average Joe or Mary when it comes to defending myself. Constantly being on the defense, however, was what wore me out. Thriving was far from what I experienced. One can only withstand so much before the alternative of leaving becomes the best option (or the only option one is able to see in the wicked environment and circumstances). Dogbert...then I would say a federal job is lesser of the two evils :-)
then I would say a federal job is lesser of the two evils :-) Only if you are unemployed. Otherwise, I'd take a private sector job any day. Well, I guess it depends on what part of the federal govt you work, some are better than others I would say.
I cannot imagine any govenment job that you wouldn't qualify for! All...... If government jobs are so great, why are the people that have them so darned rude? tb:) I guess because they know they can't be fired if they are rude. lol. | |
