Is it a Full Moon TonightLet me paint you a picture: I work in the Customer Service Desk at the local grocery store and we have a saying that whenever it's a full moon all the "crazy people" come out in mass numbers... well tonight was the night for that. First I walked in to work to find out that 6 people had been fired for giving co workers store coupon discounts and that there were at least three more people that were going to be fired. Then I was working and my boss came up to me and said that I have to teach her the closing procedures for the service desk because there may be people in the desk being fired. Last but certainly not least living in a suburb of Chicago and selling the Taste of Chicago tickets at a discounted price at the store can cause all kinds of interesting things LIKE a customer offering to pay me twenty bucks if he can buy 20 strips of tickets when there is a limit of four per person and when I said no he left and came back every ten minutes for an hour trying again and again! So I'll ask again.... Was it a FULL MOON tonight?! MASS firing from a 2-bit job at a grocery store? Is the boss an ####? and can they afford to fire that many people at once?
We are actually owned by a nationwide grocery chain and the corporate people are the ones that are doing the firing. But to answer your question no we can't afford to lose that many people. And the things they are being fired for is petty stuff. Actually, giving coupon discounts when you're not supposed to is not petty stuff. I'd say your store or your region or whatever has been audited and all this stuff has come to light. While it may seem small to you and your store, when you add it up over lots and lots of stores, you get to BIG money.
Tess I didn't think of it that way. It does add up with all the stores. But there was one person that they fired for 50 cents.
I know what you're saying but it isn't about the amount, it is about the process. For example, there's something called "the penny game". Say you're a bank teller and when you go to total up your money at the end of the day, you're short a penny. You can write it up but that takes about 5 minutes and you have a date. It is only a penny, so you take a penny out of your pocket and throw it in. End of problem. The next day, you total up your money and you're now over a penny. You weren't really short yesterday, just miscounted after all. So, you take the penny out. That's against the rules and you can be fired for it (actually you can be fired for in or out). But it is only a penny! It isn't about the amount, it is about the fact that you're violating procedure and fudging the numbers and playing fast and loose with the cash in the till. That's the kind of thing that's going on at your job. It is a great lesson in how auditors think and why these petty little things are important and how not to get caught in them. it is a shame your co-workers are getting fired, but you can really learn something here if you pay attention.
