Annoying incident
I just remembered an incident from a couple years ago. I was sitting in the cube area, and my desk was not visible from the front door or hallway. Around 10:30 AM, I heard the front door open, and my manager came in. He yelled out, "HEY MY_NAME?" I said "YES?" Then he said "OK, JUST CHECKING." WTF??? This guy had been my manager for 5 years (at 2 prior companies as well), had given me good recommendations before, and he didn't trust that I had come in to work? What a joke. That's one reason why when I was looking for a job last year, I turned down his offer to work for him at his new company. Got tired of working for the same person, and he's a bit of a micro-manager too (would check on me daily to see how my work was going). "WTF??? This guy had been my manager for 5 years (at 2 prior companies as well), had given me good recommendations before, and he didn't trust that I had come in to work? What a joke." It wasn't necessarily a matter of trust. It may have been a matter of him doing his job. I've been in the same situation before, and rarely checked in on a person I trusted until my boss hinted that I am responsible for making sure my subordinates are working when they say they are. I think my boss was right. I didn't have to sit around with a stopwatch, but covering your butt (by doing that part of your job) is still important in case someone thinks they can take advantage of your trust. You don't have to be obvious about it like your manager was.
I had a supervisor come in from her vacation to say she needed to check voicemail - my colleagues - not supervised by this bananahead - were like Oh no she didn't She just came to check up on me....wench! There was another time where both of the managers told me that they were going to be working from home the next day. So the next day, I was in the office by myself (it was a small company). In the morning, I got an IM from one of the managers, he said he was expecting a package later in the day, and wanted me to tell him if it got delivered or not. It never got delivered. I'm pretty sure he just wanted to make sure I was in the office.
Just checking in turns to just checking up so childish and obvious and then they wonder why they can't keep people! | |
