Is this fair

I was hired in April 2006.  Was told (verbally) I'd have a 3-month review and pay increase, if positive.  Also told that employees get a cost-of-living increase in June, which I would not get (understandable).

Positive review, no increase.

Fast forward to April 2007.  One-year review due end of April.  Was verbally told by HR that it was too close to scheduled cost-of-living increase, again in June, so I would not be getting a salary increase because of positive review.

Here it is, 2nd week of June, have had no review and no pay increase since being hired.  Is something wrong here?  Why have reviews if they are not acted upon?  And cost of living doesn't seem to be merit-based, so why am I trying so hard after all?

Well, you know darn tootin' well that this isn't fair!

The question is, you asked your supervisor, and he/she said....

Unfortunately, there's no law stating how companies review and give out pay based on review, (you'd be surprised how many people think there is) so there isn't that much you can actually do, except move on to the next job.

Pretty much he said live with it.  Not out of nastiness, but I'm sure it's because he's being treated the same way.  Just plain stinks.

Wish I could move on, but with what I do, it's hard to find openings.  People usually stay where they are.  Another rock/hard place situation.

Hold on a second.  If cost of living increases go out in June it is too soon to be bent out of shape that you didn't get one.  Wait until the end of July.  If they're issued "during" June, they can take effect on July's pay.

In most companies, there is a merit component to cost of living raises too.  If you don't do well on your review, you won't get one at all.  You may or may not get more based on how well you do on your review.  Wait and see how this works out before you start complaining.

Life isn't fair.

The real reason for reviews is to justify firings not to guaranteeraises. So if I want to fire someone I start giving bad reviews thenafter the firing, I point to the review and say ... "See? That's whyhe/she was fired."
.Life isn't fair; always get it in writing.
