Cant move in own company

I have always believed that bringing in outsiders should only be done when there are no qualified existing employees to assume the new position. I left 2 employers because of their lack of promoting from within. On place didn't recognize college degrees as a big + as the HR women didn't have any college. Leave the place when you have something else to go to. They obviously don't need you.
If I were you, I'd get everyone in my phat posse together and give those flunkies a good beat down!

It's all about politics in your company.  Yes, you probably will need to change employers in order to progress in your career.  It's too bad, but their loss (you) will be someone else's gain.  The good thing is that it sounds like you can get an excellent reference from your boss.

Polish up your resume and get it out there.  No sense in waiting.

SO i applied to a position in the company i have been at for a year. The position would sort of make me mov to the side and just a little down, rather than moving up. It would be a new department, marketing, what i went to school for etc.
I had my interview with someone who i have known the past year, a month later i got the results.

They didn't choose me to be a part of their department even though in my current position, we know more information than any other department, and if the new dept had any questions on using our database they could ask me as I have to be a company 'expert' at using it in case anyone has questions. The reasoning for hiring someone outside of the company was that they scored higher on a test...
The test consisted of tasks which i currentlly perform in my position, everyday. No one could believe that they chose someone else becuase of this, and its kind of insulting..telling me that i pretty much am not good at my job.

Well i knew nothing good would come out of this move becuase they are always at war with my department anyway. Now that i know i probably will never have a chance, is it wrong of me to move on out of the company? I don't feel like i have a future there and i made my boss aware of this. My boss was shocked too that i didnt get hired.

Does this happen often where an outside candidate with no knowledge of the company, the software etc is put infront of an internal candidate? It has made me a bit bitter and i feel like i no longer need to provide them with the speedy service that i am known for. Actually, there are a lot of tasks that they try pushing onto us that i am refusing because they CAN and SHOULD be done by someone in their department, especially by the new hire.

Sure it happens, all the time.  The positive reasons to hire someone outside the company are:

-broader range of experience

-new perspective

-have no ingrained bad habits to bring over from another department

-don't know all the politics so aren't involved in them for probably a year

The benefit to hiring someone within the company are:

-specific knowledge of how things work in this company

-can probably hit the ground running

-know all the politics of how things work and can work with them

In your specific case, it may well be you didn't score high enough on this test as they say.  It may be that they know too much about you or feel too comfortable with you.  It may be the bad blood between departments or it may just be that they liked the other guy better.  Should you stay or go?  If you find something somewhere else, great!  If not, stay where you are and see if there are other opportunities for you where you are.

Tess

oh yay Tess. I haven't been here in a while so i was wondering if you were still around, you pretty much alwyas give good advice.

It is really difficult, I really dislike my job right now, and i would have left it months ago but i work with a really great group of people and it makes the tasks more enjoyable. The problem with my dept is that we are the "admins" if you will of the whole company, but we are our own department. No one person is above us..aka operations.

Well ive been doing it almost 2 years now (total) and im ready to move on and finally use my brain before it really falls to mush, but at the same time trying to advance to the next level..and then back some.

I will never know the real reason, whether it was someone else did score higher (just freaks me out that my current job is the same as the test :-( ) or i was told by the head of HR that the dept i want to move to thinks i may cost too much to the new dept (the whole company is paid really low), another time i heard that they were really pushing for "someone of color" and so on.

I can totally understand the excitement of someone new coming to the dept, but they are alwyas complainign about how busy they are that they dont have time to do anything, How are they going to have the time to teach someone brand new everything they need to know? I already know t least 65% of the job. Every other job positng was indeed filled internally, but not this one (basically if someone internal applies, they will get thte job).

But...in the end im glad i didnt get chosen, i honestly cannot see myself working with those people, seeing how 'lazy' my dept perceives them, god knwos what they think of my dept..its just constant bickering anyways.

So i do feel the need to move on soon and most likely to another company even though i do like the one i am at..just really tired of the position i am.

Then it sounds like it is probably time to at least look elsewhere.  Chances are that they see you in the Admin role and can't see you doing anything else.  That happens and moving somewhere else will shed that.

Good luck!

Tess
