Graduated and no job, argh!
I graduated with a psychology degree (yeah I know not useful if is a BA) and finding work has not been easy. I have been laid off three times each for different times. The last laid off caught me off guard, the boss reasoning was that it wasn't me but the company was expending and needed more skilled employees and they couldn't afford to pay me. I have been temping and after my very short assignment was over, my temp agency never contacted me again and when I call is always a slow time. The worst part is, the army kept calling me and when I finally told them nicely I didn't want to join, he sneered "your looking for office work with a psychology degree? good luck with that!" ARGH! ARGH ARGH ARGH if anyone can offer me advice on how to help me here, I would be very grateful. I had a similar problem way long time ago when I first got out of college. I have a BA in Sociology, and almost a Masters in Sociology too. One thing I did that helped me land office-work jobs was to list on my resume some of the other classes I took while studying for my degree that related directly to office work. For example, did you take even one accounting-type class? If so, list it! Did you take any kind of typing or business-type classes? If so, list them! The idea is that you have to inform the employer that you aren' t a one-note pony, so to speak; that you have skills and education outside of your Psychology specialty. Have you tried applying at an HR office or recruiting center? Can' t you become a social worker - I mean people now a days are overstressed and many reaching limits and all. What about trying for a kinder garden teacher or assistant position? What be wrong with the army? Their enlistment bonus is like anywhere from $2,500 to $14,000, plus you get education benefits, they' ll pay on your existing student loan, you get free room and board, health insurance, dental plan, and a guaranteed paycheck for the term of your enlistment - unless you mess up somehow. The army would be good for you right now, you' d learn about the world and how to take care of yourself, and maybe even grow up too. They also have administration jobs in the army or you can just go into the air force as an office clerk if you want - hardly going to see combat that way. There are tons of things you can do. What you doing now?
No...seriously...no...especially after getting sneered at like that. If that's their attitude with me if I refuse to join then I don't want to know what their attitude is when I'm close working with them.
Thank you for the advice. I have taken many business courses while in college, almost as many as Psychology courses. Thank you for the links, I appeciate it I figure my uncheck grammar is going to make someone' s eyes bleed. While this may come off as a lame attempt at an excuse, but I was really angry and didn' t really bother checking my grammar and spelling mistakes. But you' re right, if I want to make it in the business world, I can' t let myself make them again. The thing is, you shouldn' t need spell check for the kinds of mistakes that you made. You should KNOW how those words are spelled and not have to think about it, so you need to bone up. And your sentence structure is still really lacking so you need some more work on that as well.
Hi, I take it the guy you met was a Sgt. He is not an officer. Consider the source and perhaps this: When I was in the army years ago if a person had a Bachelor's degree in anything he/she was at the E-4 level right out of basic training. And then you could put in for Officer's Training Academy and get the really good pay/perks after completion. Look at it this way: You could be telling any soldier below the 1st Officer level what to do. That recruiter sounds like many I've met. I wouldn't give him another thought, but I might consider the military perhaps in the Coast Guard or Air Force. The army is not for everyone. Good luck.
What is my sentence structure lacking in? If you can point me to the right English books, I' ll be more than happy to bone up on my English language skills. Though, honestly I think this is getting off the topic Newest update! My sentence structure was lacking in...SVO! I googled "lacking in sentence structure" | |
