Career Tips

Time to leave

I am the only female out of 7 in a branch office.  The company employs about 225 people in 7 locations. Have worked at the branch for 10 years, other than the technical staff , I have been here the longest, from when the branch was opened.  I managed the service dept until a year ago, when I was promoted to a sales support position. Because it is a small office, I was also responsible for other tasks that kept the office running smoothly.  Management was always off-site, at another branch.  I have always received excellent reviews.  The company has made a big push to standardize job descriptions and to quantify performance.  Because I wore many hats, my last review indicated that I fell short on meeting timeliness goals, but I exceeded $$ goals by about 30%.  I was reviewed (under the new system) as an entry level person in the service dept..  My replacement in the service dept is half my age, just now beginning to meet the timeliness goals ( but not the $$$ goals) and he has a Management title.  I continue to perform the other tasks, including many service duties, that I used to do in my old job.  We recently changed management, still off-site, but from a different location.  The jobs that used to be performed off-site (because of lack of personnel) have been transferred into my office - specifically to me!  I have gotten so many new duties in the past 3 weeks, that I don' t know how I will ever be able to do any of them well. I know I can do the work well enough to keep things together, but there are a lot of new "excellence" initiatives -  there is so much to do, it won' t be considered excellent performance. Meanwhile the new guy, continues merrily along, doing about 1/2 of the work that I did in the same job, so of course he will appear to be doing a much better job. I' ve been told that my sales position is no longer my first priority, my service dept. jobs are to be my top priority.

I am in my early 50' s, so I know it won' t be easy to find a new job.  I am also the main wage earner in my family as my husband is an IT refugee.  Is the company trying to make me leave?  I asked the new manager why I was reviewed as an entry level position, her answer was that It was not entry level, but there is no lower position - that is where people start in this industry!  Should I hang in there and hope the company sees the need to add a person?  Should I struggle along until my next review (3 months), and if things don' t change, just leave?  (and let them try and find someone who will handle all these jobs?) I don' t understand why now that we have a female mgr, I feel less a part of the team and more like a pack mule!  Is it time to throw in the towel?

It is time to look elsewhere (quietly) but not to quit. Don' t quit until you have something else in hand.  If it takes 6 months to find something, so be it.  In the meantime, you have a paycheck.

Thank you for your advice. Yes, It' s time to start looking......
