NEVER use your current employer

L:earned a lesson at work today, this guy, who was a Govt Contracter for the Government, well, its one of those jobs, that if you've been there long enough, if they like you, they'll hire on full time.

Well, he was there for a couple of years, then started looking for outside work....well, appareantly, he asked his current supervisor if he could use her as a work reference, becuase he started looking for work elsewhere.

Well, a position opened up in HIS dept, he wanted it, but they wouldn't give it to him, becuase they figured "Hey, you're lookin elsewhere...you dont' want us...we dont' want you!"

Basically sounds like they took it personal.

So, on an application when it says, "May we contact your current supervisor" say a big NO!!!!!
Not always true.  I am considering other positions right now.  My current VP is one of my best references.  I was open and honest with him about my current dissatisfaction he concurs that it may not get better in the near term.  He does not want me to leave and is working to try to change the source of my unhappiness but also recognizes that he may not be able to.  So when I have an opportunity that I am interested in exploring and it gets to the stage of reference checking I let him know.  So far in the past 40 days he has provided 3 references for me.  I have turned down 2 jobs and I still considering 1.

So do you think the employer who gets offended at you using them for a reference and taking it personal, just because you' re looking elsewhere is narrow minded when that supervisor won' t hire you for a permanent position in their company, only because you were looking elsewhere?

The position wasn' t opened at the time, but then when it opened, his boss was basically like "Screw you, I' m not interviewing you, apparently your looking somewhere else, so why would I would want to hire you??"

In a word, YES.  I think this is individual behavior.
