I need HELP!!!!
Hey Folks, Here's a little story for you all. I have an InformationTechnology degree from RIT with a GPA of 3.2 and I have about 9 monthsof internship experience. I receivedthis degree in March of 2006 so it has been year. Sounds like Ishould have a job that goes along with this major right? Wrong, I have had to get crappy part-time jobs like working inlandscaping and clothing retail. I have been getting severalinterviews lately but I seem to never get the job and they never tellme a straight up answer. They say something like "we need someonewith more experience" or they don't say anything at all. How I amsupposed to get experience when no one will give me a chance? The gap is getting larger and larger from when I acquired my degree andits not looking good. Luckily I have an entry level positionphone interview coming up tomorrow. One of questions that I willbe asked, as told by someone I know that is on the inside, is why haveyou been working at a clothing store for the past 5 months instead ofsomething in your field? Anyone have an excellent professional answer for that? My to thiswould quite unprofessional and full of anger which does not look goodin interviews. Thanks! What kind of job are you looking for in particular: Tech support, net administering, sa, dev? I was an IT manager in my past life, and I hired IT people for all those of positions. Giving generic answers to why you don' t hire people is often the easiest thing to do, and assumptions can' t be drawn. At one point in time I would answer people very candidly about my decisions, but often I came off as a jerk. My advice is to review and solidify your skill set. You have some experience in the field, albeit an internship, but it' s helpful. If you are looking for the same type of position as your internship, maybe you could ask your previous managers or peers to evaluate your experience & skill set. As for your gap in employment, answer honestly. You have been diligently trying to find employment, come close, but not gotten the position. You work in retail because you' re a responsible individual and need money to faithfully discharge your financial obligations. Forget the anger, frustration, and desperation. These are palpable in an interview, you have to go in to each new interview w/o the baggage of your previous negative experiences. | |
