Demoted without causeI read this entry on another board: Hello... I am new here, and would like some advice on what has just happened to me at work. I have been at my current job for about 8 months as a store manager fora large company. This is my first job of this nature. In my opinion, I have done a great job with completing paperwork, dealing with customers and all managerial duties that are necessary. This company has been through so many managers in this particular area and I am the only manager that has stayed for more then 6 months. Recently, I got a call from a superior to tell me that I am getting demoted because the store isn' t productive as far as staffing and sales. In fact, two levels of superiors above me got demoted as well. Every one of my employees, as well as the superiors above have said that I do a great job in my roles a manager and have even said that I am probably the best one yet at this particular store. What is a good way of finding out the real truth has to why this happened, because nothing makes sense. I have never gotten written up and was hardly ever told I was doing something wrong and when I was told this, I fixed it quickly. I was never given a chance to prove myself when the sales supposedly became unsatisfactory,so where I was my chance to improve the situation? There was no chance,just a phone call saying that as of Monday (this was Saturday) that so and so would be the manager and I would just be pushed down to full time with uncertainty to what my pay would be in that position. If there is anyone that could help me with this that would be great! Any advice would be helpful. Currently I am stuck in this position for 1year, unless I get fired, or choose to pay back manager training costs.When I leave, how do I explain a demotion if this is permanent? What should I do? Man, what a bummer, she didn' t even deserve it. And what' s the B.S. about paying back for training, they can do to he** if they expect that. As to the training, bet (s)he signed an agreement that stated she would remain on the job for 12 months after training or repay some specific $ amount. So yes they can do that.
Pay back for training?? And I' ll assume we' re not talking about college courses which I have heard of being required to stay 6 months if you took advantage of tuition reimbursement - which is why I' d rather file for financial aid and get loans! But for training there isn' t an option like that....what in the world are these people worse than organized crime rings I' ll tell you! Well, as they say, that agreement is only as good as the paper it' s written on. I' d just "walk" and tell them to go to he**. If they demoted HER, they can' t make her pay them back. Those agreements are only good for people who voluntarily quit. They can' t just say, "We letting you, now pay us back." Excellent point!!! That being said the pin has been pulled from the grenade and it' s time to walk away from any place of employment that wants to scr*w you and not take you to dinner. Unfortunately, I will bet she is young and new to the job market. They haven't terminated her only demoted her, she is still employed. From an ethical standpoint I agree with you, by the way. But if she voluntarily quits then it is my guess that they can indeed collect the value of their "training". What is really bad about this is that this nebulous training is likely only relevant to that store chain and has not real market value at all. They cannot take, what she does not have. or cannot provide. I'd tell them to sue me, and go pound dirt. I likely would also to tell you the truth. Problem with that is that they don't sound like a very nice group so they just might do that which in turn could affect her for 7 to 10 years. They could turn the "debt" over to collections, after they deduct as much as possible from her final paycheck. Then it would hit her credit report. Believe me I am not saying it is right only that it is possible. With employers being what they are today it is in fact probable. Then she would have to contend with the future issue of credit checking when she applies for jobs. Sucks I know. It would be easier to either find a cheap attorney to send a letter or suck it up for six months. A few things.... Ther are 2 sides to every story! Having worked in corporate offices of retail stores for years I know all about the paperwork! She said that she filled out all the paperwork correctly. Each day a sales report is prepared and compared to the sales for the same day of the previous year, sales compared to budget, MTD sales, ect.... Paperwork includes the % of payroll spent to sales dollars. It is not enough to fill out the paperwork, but to also react to what the paperwork says. Sales is what retail is all about as well as ahow much payroll it cost to make the sales. If she was filling out ther paperwork it should of been no surprise to her that sales were down. Above anything else this is the managers job, to drive sales, control payroll in relation to sales. She should of known her job was at risk. I find it impossible to believe that no one ever discussed with her the sales problem or at least how to lower costs while the sales were in a slump... This just would not of happened. But I also never have heard of a retailer charging for training either, with the exception of college courses. If not college courses it seems the training they gave her was not successful so what value did she really receive? I cant see how a company would be successful in forcing her to pay for something of no present or future value. I would walk! Yet if college courses most if not all companies require for you to stay a year to use the value for what they have paid for. For this type of education she will have a future benefit from and it is only fair that she pay for this benefit. Still I might leave and try to make arrangements for a re payment plan. At this point all respect for her title is lost and this job could do some long reaching ego damage to her. | |
