Post Office jobs arent steadyOkay, someone said to me, "Go check out the post office, that'd be a great place to work for they have great benefits, steady income, good money, etc, go for it!" Then when I went to apply I was told it's on a "as needed" basis a "part time position" Turns out, they only call you when they need you...so it's not even a part-time position....all you do is apply for the position, go home, sit on your thumbs until they call you. Apparently, you replace the "CAREER" carrier with yourself, because they are out sick or something Okay, question to these people...."How do I become a CAREER Postal Carrier??" I don't want that other crap job. Of course, you could look for another job during that time, then when you get a steady job,......guess what you get a phone call from the post office, "We need you to come in" I say, "Sorry, I can't I'm working that day." Kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it? 1. Sit at home with no income, until the Post Office decides they need you 2. Find another job during that time. ?? My ex spent some time working for the P.O. Once you've applied and passed all their tests and are on the "call" list, they do start calling, -- starting with the person with the most seniority. As you show you are reliable and can come in whenever they call, your name moves up the list. (If you can't come in when they call, you start moving down the list and get called less and less, until they "invite you to quit".) Then, when they have a full-time position with all the bennies open up, they offer the person whose name is at the top of the list the position. Unfortunately, it can take anywhere from 6 months to a year just to get ON the "call" list. Then figure another 2 years or more of waiting for your name to rise to the top. Most people don't stick with it long enough to get their name to the top of the list. Lady....so what does one do in the mean time (while waiting for the calls) for an income? They do pay a little over 17/hr though if you DO work. 17 per "evaluated" hour, whatever that means ( I think I know what it means, we under close scrutiny here? lol) Well if you are serious and want a job with the PO then you have to play by their rules You could get a job working nights and be on that list. People do it. There is a company down the street that does that. Once you get in its a sweet job but you have to wait on that list. While waiting for calls, my ex worked as a delivery person at Pizza Hut. Afternoon/night shift hours (but not too late), and decent tips kept the lights on until he started being called regularly. He was #2 on the list when there was a bad snow storm and he got called. Unfortunately, he was out-of-state when the storm hit, and couldn't make it in for three days. He got "invited" to quit. Now he works TWO part-time jobs (both as a pizza delivery person, just different Pizza Huts.)
Take the civil services exam, get a good score, apply for a full-time position, wait until one opens up. Then you have a job until retirement, unless you do something pretty egregious. You're never going to go anywhere being a 'casual'. | |
