OFF TOPIC BUT VERY URGENTI saw this on Thursday/Friday and was very concerned for my pets and told a co-worker who has a dog. Something like this happened a few years back didn' t it??? Here' s the Web Site for the dog food we buy for our dog. We used the same brand for our first four dogs: This brand can be found at Costco. I encourage everyone to switch their animals to this brand. Many thanks for posting to this board about the Menu Foods recall. If it saves even one pet' s health or life, you' ve done right. Today' s (March 19, 2007) USA Today carried an article about how xylitol, a popular artificial sweetener often found in sugar-free and/or low-calorie candy, gum, mints, cookies, baked goods, and other items, is highly toxic to dogs. Even a very small amount can quickly cause fatal liver failure. As the article notes: "Right now, xylitol is used mostly in cookies, candies, cupcakes and other sweets developed for people who have diabetes. It' s also sold in bags of crystals for baking. Because of its bacteria-killing properties, it is put into some oral care products, including . . . [certain] toothpastes. It also is beginning to be used in a broad assortment of products intended for the general public. Among them: Jello sugar-free puddings and a wide variety of sugar-free gums, including Trident, Orbit, Stride, Icebreakers and Altoids." The article contains many other informative links, including one to an article from Canada about the effects the recall is having on the pet-food company, which is itself Canadian.
Chocolates and caffeine are also poison to your animals. Also avocado is poisonous to many animals. Alwyas read the indgredients to make sure its all made from 'natural' not man made products. Perfume is poison to your animal. Xylitol is highly toxic to both animals and humans, except in humans it just takes a little longer for the kidneys to break down.
Thank you! You may be lean but you are certainly not mean!! All the messages on this Thread were informative! By the way, folks, send emails with these links to everyone on your contact list and in your address book and inform everyone at work about this crisis.
I was out of the country but my wonderful petsitter checked everything in the house.
Thank God she did. She is wonderful. She is worth her weight in gold. Give her a raise! Parents who own pets need to make sure their kids are responsible and are extremely careful about not leaving stuff around that can harm the animals. Young children are not capable of being decent pet sitters and parents cannot be home 24/7. I do not know what the right age would be when a child would show enough concern for an animal not to put him or her in jeopardy; I suppose that varies with each kid.
Yeah she is great. She was training a newbie as well so they had fun apparently with my two long haired cats who now are half bald. But that is ok.
Excellent post Species. Tylenol should not be given to dogs, raisins are toxic (Bunzo supplied that information). Some things that most of us may not think of such as Anti-freeze and household cleaners are blamed for many pet deaths. Anti-freeze tastes good, (No, I didn' t do a taste test) I was listening to a vet talking about things in the home that we don' t even think about. Plants, floor wax, etc. I use the same method that I did when my children were babies, locks on cabinets, locks on toilets, (for those of us who use toilet bowl cleaners.)no exposure to insecticide, gasoline, etc. It;s beter to be safe than sorry. | |
