Humbling experience

In December I was told that my position was re-locating to another state.  I have been with my company for 28 years, and gave them 150%.  There were all nighters, weekends, and many other times when I gave up something for my company.

I thought finding a new position would not be as difficult as it has been.

I have a good resume, I seem to write a good cover letter, and I have gotten a dozen or so interviews.

The positions that I' ve been offered are junk, and the ones that I really want, I don' t seem to get calls back.

I actually appreciate when a company calls with a negative.  At least I got a response.

This is a very humbling experience.  I guess it' s just inexperience in job searching.  I just want to find a new position, and start a new chapter in my life.

I am lucky that at least I still have a job to go to, but it sucks with my co-workers on edge with me, my boss being difficult, etc.

Hi why are your colleges on edge with you and difficult mgt ? You have been a good asset to the company for so many years, what is their problem? Are you pressured to quit? Specialist and high level jobs are scarce, maybe you could use the expertise and network of high end recruiters in your area.

28 years? Can't you just retire with a  pension?

Sorry to hear what you are going through.

One thing may be that you appear "stale" to employers... being in one job for 28 years. If you have changed jobs within the company, try to make those jobs appear as completely different experiences, including breaking them up on your resume. As for your co-workers and supervisors, look past them and concentrate on your future (without them).

Thanks for the feedback.

I already have done exactly what you recommended.  I have broken down my jobs within this company.

It seems that the 28 years in one place is working for me.  The interviews that I did received like that part of the picture.

What a great thought!!!!!!

However, I am only 43 years old, have 3 daughters, and I am not a cop, fireman, sanitation worker or postal employee.

I have to keep going.

It starts with the idiot president of this company.

I' m not that upset with my co-workers. They are understanding, but it' s still a difficult situation here.  They are all nervous about who is next or what added functions they will be given, etc.

How old are your daughters? Did you have your kids later in life?

I am only 43 years old.  28 years experience comes from starting a job when I was 15.  Worked at it through high school & college.  At one point many years ago I went to school all day, and worked full time at night.

This is what I meant when I said I gave up a lot for this stinkin company.

PS:  My daughters are 14, 12, and 8

You need to see a career counselor.  Ask your HR department if they' re offering this service.  If they are, take them up on it.  If not, your local community college or unemployment office should have one (or just check the phone book).  They can have a look at your resume, go over a practice interview with you and even talk to you about related careers you might not have considered.  Since you started this job as a kid, you really haven' t had any practice in the job hunting game.  Get some professional help with it, trust me, it will be worth it!
