may we contact the employerIs there negative influence on my application if i answer "no" to the question "may we contact this employer? Thanks It will certainly raise a question that you should be prepared to answer. If it is your current employer it is simple. Otherwise there might be some issues. If it is your current employer, a "no" answer would not weigh against you. Most employers realize that job searches are confidential and won't call a current employer (although some may want to call after a job offer has been accepted). If you answer "no" to any other employer, you need to have a good reason, such as the company is out of business, your former manager died, etc... With most employers today, they will not provide much if any information about former employees to anyone inquiring. It is usually a matter of company policy. Some American corporations got involved in lawsuits filed by former employees who were trashed--improperly and erroneously--by some nitwit who responded to an inquiry about the former employee. Often the only thing the employer might provide are the dates of employment--subjective judgements about the employee just ain't gonna happen. I'm not sure if these limitations are employed by small or micro-companies, where the owner or manager is easily accessible and might be willing to shoot his/her mouth off about a former employee to anyone who asks, just for spite. | |
